Smart lighting is brilliant, but nobody wants to rip out their plaster just to run new cables. In Leeds, especially in the solid brick terraces of Armley or Harehills, chasing walls is a messy, expensive nightmare. That is where WiFi dimmer modules come in.

These clever little units sit behind your existing light switch, giving you app and voice control whilst keeping your physical switch working. However, not all modules are created equal. Some are too bulky for standard UK back boxes, and others flicker terribly with modern LED bulbs.

I've sorted through the clutter to find the modules that actually work. In this review, I'll compare three options: a budget-friendly starter, a high-quality dual-gang module, and a reliable problem-solver for 2-way switching.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "Fits Standard Switch Boxes"

The Theory

"The box says 'mini design' that fits anywhere."

The Reality

In newer builds with deep 35mm-47mm boxes, yes. But in many older Leeds homes with shallow 16mm or 25mm metal boxes, you will struggle to fit the module and the wiring without a spacer or deepening the back box. It is a tight squeeze.

The Spec: "Works with any LED"

The Theory

"Compatible with dimmable LEDs."

The Reality

Cheap LEDs often flicker at low dimming levels because the module struggles with the low load. You usually need to adjust the 'minimum brightness' setting in the app to stop the strobe effect.

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

HiCOZZIE 1 PCS Tuya WiFi Smart Dimmers Switch Module

Budget Pick
HiCOZZIE 1 PCS Tuya WiFi Smart Dimmers Switch Module

HiCOZZIE

This is a classic entry-level Tuya module. It does exactly what it says on the tin for a very low price. Ideally suited if you just want to trial smart lighting in a single room without spending a fortune.

Price£7.09 (at the time of writing)
ConnectivityWiFi (No Hub Required)
AppTuya / Smart Life
The Good
  • Extremely affordable entry point
  • Compact enough for standard deep boxes
  • Works reliably with the Tuya ecosystem
The Bad
  • Requires a neutral wire at the switch (common issue in older UK wiring)
  • Plastic casing feels a bit flimsy compared to premium brands

Installer Tip:

Before buying, unscrew your light switch (power off first!) and check if you have a blue neutral wire. Most UK light switches only have 'live' and 'switch live'. If there's no neutral, this module won't work without rewiring.

MOES Smart WiFi LED Dimmer Switch Module, 2 Gang (2 Pack)

Quality Choice
MOES Smart WiFi LED Dimmer Switch Module, 2 Gang (2 Pack)

MOES

MOES is a brand I come across often, and this 2-gang module is excellent for living rooms where you have two light zones on one switch plate. The build quality is superior, and the dual-control capability saves cramping two separate modules into one box.

Price£35.99 (at the time of writing)
Gang2 Gang (Controls 2 circuits)
Size40 x 40 x 18 mm
The Good
  • Controls two separate light circuits from one module
  • Very compact (18mm depth) helps with installation
  • Memory function restores brightness after power cuts
The Bad
  • Higher cost upfront
  • Wiring can get very fiddly in a confined back box with 2-gangs involved

Installer Tip:

Connect your earth wires properly to the metal back box. Even though the module is plastic, safety regulations (BS 7671) require the circuit to be earthed correctly, especially when cramming extra tech into the wall.

MOES Tuya WiFi Smart Light LED Dimmer Switch Module, 1/2 Way

Problem Solver
MOES Tuya WiFi Smart Light LED Dimmer Switch Module, 1/2 Way

MOES

This is the problem solver for stairs and landings. Its ability to work with existing 2-way circuits (where two switches control one light) makes it invaluable. You only need to install one of these modules to make the whole circuit smart.

Price£16.87 (at the time of writing)
Compatibility1-Way or 2-Way circuits
Warranty2 Years
The Good
  • Converts standard 2-way switching to smart lighting easily
  • Retractive (push) switch compatible for better dimming feel
  • Reliable connection to Alexa/Google Home
The Bad
  • Resetting can require a separate switch if the WiFi drops out repeatedly
  • Still requires a neutral wire at the installation point

Installer Tip:

For the best experience, swap your standard rocker switches for 'retractive' or 'momentary' switches. This allows you to hold the button to dim and press once to toggle, which feels much more natural than flicking a rocker switch on and off to trigger dimming modes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a neutral wire for these WiFi dimmer modules?
Yes, all three modules reviewed here require a neutral wire at the switch location. In many UK homes (especially pre-1990s), the neutral is often only found in the ceiling rose, not the switch drop. If you don't have a neutral at the switch, you will need an electrician to pull one in, or look for 'No Neutral' specific capacitors/modules.
Will these fit in my existing back box?
It depends on the depth. Standard UK metal back boxes are often 25mm deep, which is usually too shallow for a module plus the wires. You typically need a 35mm or 47mm deep back box. If replacing the box isn't an option (e.g., solid brick walls in Leeds), you can use a 'spacer' to bring the switch forward by 10mm.
Can I still use the physical light switch?
Absolutely. That is the main benefit of these modules over smart bulbs. Your family can still use the wall switch as normal, but you gain app and voice control on top. If someone turns the switch off, the module remains powered so you don't lose smart connectivity.
Why are my lights flickering after installation?
This is usually because the LED load is too low or not compatible. Ensure your bulbs are 'dimmable LEDs'. You may also need to go into the app settings and adjust the 'minimum brightness' threshold to cut out the lower range where the flickering occurs.
Is WiFi better than ZigBee for dimmers?
WiFi modules are easier because they don't need a separate hub—they connect straight to your router. However, if you have 20+ smart devices, WiFi can get congested. For most standard homes installing just a few dimmers, WiFi is perfectly fine and more cost-effective.
Is it safe to install these myself?
Under Part P of the Building Regulations, you can replace accessories and make minor alterations in non-special locations. However, electricity kills. If you are unsure about safe isolation, identifying switch lines vs neutrals, or checking earth continuity, please call a professional. At OR Electrics, we see many DIY attempts that end in melted wires.
