There is nothing more frustrating than an RCD that trips every time it rains. In my experience across Leeds, from damp cellars in Harehills to garden offices in Horsforth, 90% of outdoor electrical faults come down to one thing: water ingress in cheap or poorly fitted junction boxes.

A 'weatherproof' box protects your live connections from moisture, dust, and insects. But not all boxes are created equal. Installing an EV charger or garden lighting requires specific IP ratings to ensure the system remains safe and compliant over time.

In this review, I've selected three junction boxes I frequently encounter or use. I'll explain which ones represent the best value, which offer the highest protection for exposed areas, and why spending a few pounds more now can save you a fortune in call-out fees later.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "The Word 'Waterproof'"

The Theory

"Marketing suggests the box can be submerged in water or withstand a pressure washer."

The Reality

Most 'waterproof' boxes are IP44 or IP55, meaning they are splash-proof. For heavy rain or exposed walls, you need IP65 or higher. None of these are suitable for burying underground without specialised resin.

The Spec: "Cable Entry Points"

The Theory

"Push the cable through the rubber grommet and it seals itself."

The Reality

Rubber grommets eventually perish or leak if cut incorrectly. For a truly long-lasting seal, I always recommend using proper compression glands, especially for Steel Wire Armoured (SWA) cables.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

ABB IP44 Junction Box • Waterproof Electric Cable Connector Unit

Budget Pick
ABB IP44 Junction Box • Waterproof Electric Cable Connector Unit

ABB

This ABB box is a staple for basic outdoor connections where direct heavy rain isn't a constant threat. It is compact, cost-effective, and ideal for sheltering connections under a porch or soffit.

Price£2.75 (at time of writing)
IP RatingIP44 (Splash Proof)
Dimensions80 x 80 x 40mm
MaterialSelf-extinguishing Thermoplastic
The Good
  • Extremely affordable price point
  • Includes cable glands for a better seal
  • Compact size fits discreetly in corners
The Bad
  • IP44 is not suitable for fully exposed walls in heavy storms
  • Slightly smaller internal space makes wiring 2.5mm twin & earth tricky

Installer Tip:

Because this is IP44, mount it carefully. Always drill a tiny 2mm 'weep hole' in the very bottom corner if it's outside. This allows any condensation that forms inside to drain out rather than pooling and rotting the terminals.

Pack of 4 White IP55 Junction Box, ABS Plastic Outdoor External Electrical Enclosure

Quality Option
Pack of 4 White IP55 Junction Box, ABS Plastic Outdoor External Electrical Enclosure

AVARTEK

AVARTEK is a Yorkshire-founded brand, which I always like to support. These boxes offer IP55 protection, which is a step up from the budget option, and the pack of four represents excellent value for larger projects like garden lighting schemes.

Price£11.45 (at time of writing)
IP RatingIP55 (Dust & Jet Protected)
Dimensions85 x 85 x 50mm
Pack Size4 Units
The Good
  • Higher IP55 rating handles Yorkshire rain better than IP44
  • Robust ABS plastic construction
  • Plain sides allow custom drilling for glands exactly where you need them
The Bad
  • You need to provide your own glands if the push-through membranes aren't sufficient
  • White colour can discolour over years of direct UV exposure

Installer Tip:

When drilling the entry holes, use a step drill (cone cutter) rather than a standard twist bit. It cuts a cleaner hole through the ABS plastic without cracking it, ensuring your cable glands seat perfectly for a watertight seal.

ABB IP65 Junction Box • Fully Dust Sealed Enclosure

Problem-solving
ABB IP65 Junction Box • Fully Dust Sealed Enclosure

ABB

When you are installing an EV charger on an exposed driveway or dealing with a location that gets hit by the full force of the weather, this IP65 box is the solution. It offers significant protection against dust and low-pressure water jets.

Price£6.76 (at time of writing)
IP RatingIP65 (High Protection)
Dimensions153 x 110 x 66mm
Design CodeEuropa Series
The Good
  • Superior IP65 rating effectively blocks dust and direct water sprays
  • Generous internal space (153mm wide) makes terminating armoured cable much easier
  • Halogen-free thermoplastic is safer in fire situations
The Bad
  • Higher cost per unit
  • Larger footprint might be visibly intrusive on a domestic facade

Installer Tip:

The extra space in here is brilliant for housing WAGO connectors or slightly bulkier terminals. If you are extending a circuit for an EV charger and need to join 6mm cables, this is the box size you want to avoid cramping the cables and causing heat buildup.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between IP44, IP55, and IP65?
The second digit is key for water. IP44 handles splashes (light rain). IP55 handles low-pressure jets (heavy rain). IP65 is dust-tight and handles water jets. For exposed walls in Leeds, I always favour IP55 or IP65 to be safe.
Can I bury these junction boxes underground?
No, absolutely not. Standard 'waterproof' boxes will fill with water if buried due to hydrostatic pressure. To bury connections, you must use a specialised joint kit filled with two-part resin or gel that sets solid, completely encapsulating the wires.
Why does my outdoor electrical circuit keep tripping?
It is usually moisture ingress. Even a tiny amount of dampness bridging the Live and Earth connections can trip an RCD. Check your junction box seals; if the rubber has perished or the lid is cracked, water is getting in. Replacing the box with a high-quality IP65 unit usually solves this.
Do I need an electrician to install an outdoor junction box?
If you are extending an existing circuit or adding new cabling (like for an EV charger), this is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. For safety and compliance, especially with external power which carries higher risks, it is best to hire a qualified electrician.
