If you have ever opened a light fitting or a junction box in an older property, you have likely seen the old strip connectors—often wrapped in degrading black tape with copper showing. In my line of work, these are a common fail point, causing flickering lights and, in worst-case scenarios, thermal damage.

For professional electricians, Wago connectors have revolutionised how we join wires. They are faster, safer, and when used correctly in a suitable enclosure, they are classed as 'Maintenance Free' (MF). This is crucial for connections hidden under floorboards or in lofts where access is difficult.

In this review, I'm looking at the three Wago products I keep in my van at all times: a budget-friendly enclosure to keep your connections compliant, the gold-standard splicing connector for general use, and a clever problem-solver for those frustratingly short wires.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "Maintenance Free (MF) Rating"

The Theory

"Wago connectors are maintenance free, meaning they don't need accessible inspection hatches."

The Reality

This is only true if they are housed in a specific manufacturing-approved enclosure (like a WAGOBOX) and secured properly. A Wago floating loose in a ceiling void is NOT maintenance free and is a code violation.

The Spec: "Current Rating (32A / 41A)"

The Theory

"These connectors can handle high electrical loads, suitable for ring mains and cooker circuits."

The Reality

Whilst the connector can handle the load, the weak point is often the condition of the existing cable in old houses. We always treat old rubber or crumbling PVC cabling with extreme caution, regardless of the connector quality.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

WAGO WAGOBOX Light Junction Box (207-3303)

Budget Pick
WAGO WAGOBOX Light Junction Box (207-3303)

WAGO

Whilst technically an enclosure rather than a connector, this box is essential for using Wagos safely. At just £2.59, it ensures your downlight or junction connections meet BS 7671 standards by providing strain relief and mechanical protection.

Price£2.59 (at the time of writing)
BrandWAGO
ApplicationEnclosure for 221 & 224 series
The Good
  • Essential for creating 'Maintenance Free' connections
  • Integrated cable clamps prevent strain on the wires
  • Compact enough to fit through standard downlight cut-outs
The Bad
  • Connectors must be purchased separately
  • Can represent a fiddly fit if you are trying to cram too many cables in

Installer Tip:

When installing downlights in Leeds homes with insulation, don't just bury this box. Ensure it's not covered by thermal insulation unless the downlight and box are rated for it, to prevent overheating.

Wago 221-413 Splicing Connector 3 Conductors (Pack of 50)

Quality Pick
Wago 221-413 Splicing Connector 3 Conductors (Pack of 50)

WAGO

The 221 series is the bread and butter of modern electrical work. This 3-port connector allows you to join solid, stranded, and fine-stranded wires together reliably. The transparent housing allows for visual inspection, ensuring the wire is fully inserted before you close the lever.

Price£16.43 (at the time of writing)
BrandWAGO
Capacity0.14-4 mm² conductors
The Good
  • Transparent case lets you verify the connection visually
  • Lever design requires no tools—saves hands from screwdriver fatigue
  • Reusable (unlike push-fit connectors)
The Bad
  • More expensive per unit than old screw terminal blocks
  • Slightly bulkier than the 2-port version in tight back boxes

Installer Tip:

Strip your wire to exactly 11mm. There is actually a strip length gauge printed on the side of every connector. If you strip too short, the connection might be weak; too long, and you leave live copper exposed. Precision matters.

WAGO 221-2411 Terminal 2 Conductor Inline (Pack of 10)

Problem-solving Pick
WAGO 221-2411 Terminal 2 Conductor Inline (Pack of 10)

WAGO

This is a game-changer for extending short wires. In many Victorian terraces in Leeds, we find wires that have been snapped off too short in the back box. This inline connector joins wires in a straight line rather than side-by-side, saving crucial space in crowded fittings.

Price£5.90 (at the time of writing)
BrandWAGO
TypeInline / Through Connector
The Good
  • Solves the issue of 'too short' wires without bunching cables
  • Streamlined profile makes it easier to push back into the wall
  • Same transparent reliable lever technology as the standard 221s
The Bad
  • Higher cost per unit than standard Wagos
  • Pack size of 10 is small if you have a big job

Installer Tip:

Use these when extending a cable for a light switch replacement where the old wires are tight against the wall. Because they lie flat, they don't push the switch plate out like a standard block would.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Wago connectors safe to use behind plaster?
They are safe to use in inaccessible areas (like under floors or behind plaster) ONLY if they are housed in a suitable 'Maintenance Free' (MF) enclosure like the WAGOBOX or WAGOBOX-X. You cannot simply plaster over loose connectors.
Why are Wagos better than screw terminal strips?
Screw terminals can loosen over time due to thermal cycling (wires expanding and contracting with heat) or vibration. Wagos use a spring-clamp mechanism that applies constant pressure to the wire, meaning they never come loose. They are far safer for preventing electrical fires.
Can I reuse Wago connectors?
Yes, the 221 lever series reviewed here fits this criteria perfectly. You simply lift the lever to release the wire. This is brilliant for testing or temporary setups. However, the push-wire (773 series) are generally considered single-use.
I am rewiring a house in Leeds; which Wagos do/should I buy?
For a full rewire, you will need a mix. The 221-413 (3-way) is your standard for socket loops and lighting. You will also want plenty of 2-way and 5-way connectors. Don't forget the lighting boxes for your downlights. Safety first!
Do I need a professional to install these?
Whilst replacing a light fitting is permitted for homeowners, full circuit alterations or rewiring in 'special locations' (like bathrooms) falls under Part P of the Building Regulations. If you are unsure about ring continuity or earth loop impedance, please call a professional like OR Electrics.
