Let's be honest: running armoured cable 20 metres down the garden to light up a shed or back gate is the 'proper' way to do things, but it can be costly and disruptive. For many homeowners in Leeds, especially those in rental properties or with established gardens, digging trenches just isn't an option.

In the past, solar lights were a bit of a gimmick—dim glows that died two hours after sunset. However, LED efficiency and battery technology have improved massively. In 2025, we are finally seeing solar security lights that can actually deter intruders and prevent trips and falls.

That said, not all are created equal. In this review, I'm looking at three options that offer genuine utility: a budget pick for simple illumination, a high-output unit for brightness, and a multi-pack solution for covering large perimeters.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "Lumen Output Claims (Brightness)"

The Theory

"Manufacturers often claim 2000LM+ outputs that rival mains-powered floodlights."

The Reality

In a UK winter, the battery rarely charges enough to sustain that brightness for long. Expect a bright burst for 20-30 seconds when motion is detected, but don't rely on them for continuous floodlighting like a mains LED.

The Spec: "IP65 Waterproof Rating"

The Theory

"The unit is sealed against dust and low-pressure water jets from any direction."

The Reality

Cheaper plastics expand and contract in our freezing temperatures, eventually compromising the seal. For longevity, installing them under a soffit or guttering (providing some shelter) significantly extends their life compared to full exposure.

For just over a tenner, you get two functional PIR lights. These aren't going to flood a football pitch, but for lighting up a bin store or a dark pathway along the side of a house, they are fantastic value.

Modes3 Intelligent Modes
The Good
  • Extremely affordable entry point
  • Compact size fits neatly on fence posts
  • Wide-angle design covers decent peripheral area
The Bad
  • Smaller solar panel struggles in mid-winter
  • Plastic casing feels lightweight compared to pro gear

Installer Tip:

Don't install these too high. Because the sensor and light are small, mounting them at fence height (around 1.8m) gives the best balance of motion detection and usable light spread for seeing where you're walking.

One Fire Solar Lights Outdoor, 468LED+2000LM Super Bright

Quality Choice
One Fire Solar Lights Outdoor, 468LED+2000LM Super Bright

One Fire

If you need something closer to the performance of a wired light, this unit from One Fire is the step up. With 468 LEDs and a larger surface area, it throws light much further, making it suitable for driveways or larger rear gardens.

Price£23.81 (at time of writing)
Brightness2000 Lumens (Claimed)
Battery1500mAh
The Good
  • Significantly brighter than budget models
  • Three-sided design illuminates corners well
  • Larger battery capacity helps in winter months
The Bad
  • More expensive unit cost
  • Larger footprint requires more wall space

Installer Tip:

This unit has side-facing LEDs. For maximum effect, install it on a flat wall rather than a corner post; the reflection off the brickwork actually helps diffuse the light and reduces glare.

Solar Security Lights Outdoor Garden - 4 Pack 248 LED

The problem with security lighting is often 'blind spots'. A single bright light casts long shadows. This 4-pack allows you to daisy-chain light sources along a perimeter fence or alleyway, ensuring there's nowhere to hide.

Price£18.99 (at time of writing)
Pack Size4 Units
Efficiency22% Solar Conversion Rate
The Good
  • Excellent value per unit (under £5 each)
  • Allows for complete perimeter coverage
  • Staggering lights eliminates shadow spots
The Bad
  • Lower brightness per individual unit
  • Requires mounting four separate units

Installer Tip:

Use these to create a 'guided path'. Place them 3-4 metres apart along a fence line. As you walk, they will trigger in sequence, which is safer than relying on one distant floodlight to illuminate uneven paving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do solar security lights work in a British winter?
Yes, but with reduced performance. In Leeds, our winter days are short and often grey. Quality solar lights will still charge, but the battery might only last for 20-30 triggers per night rather than 100+. I always advise cleaning the solar panel with a damp cloth every few weeks in winter to remove grime and optimise charging.
Are solar lights as good as hardwired electric lights?
Honesty is key here: No. A mains-wired LED floodlight guarantees constant power and maximum brightness regardless of the weather. However, solar lights are an excellent 'Plan B' for areas where wiring is too expensive or difficult to install. For simple trip hazards or deterring opportunists, they are perfectly adequate.
Where should I position the solar panel?
Ideally, the panel needs to face South for maximum exposure. If you have a North-facing wall, performance will be poor. In that case, look for models with a separate solar panel on a cable, so you can mount the light on the North wall and the panel on a South-facing roof.
Do these lights help with home insurance?
While security lighting is looked upon favourably, most insurers generally prefer hardwired, professional installations for primary security. However, any lighting is better than none—deterring a burglar before they attempt forced entry is the main goal.
Can I replace the batteries in these units?
In many budget models, the batteries are soldered in or hard to access to keep the unit waterproof. However, some quality units use standard 18650 rechargeable batteries which can be replaced. Check the specific model manual, but generally, at this price point, the entire unit is often replaced after 3-4 years.
