Smart lighting has moved on from being a gimmick to a genuine home improvement. However, the market is flooded with cheap LED strips that often feature dangerous transformers, poor adhesive that ruins plaster, or apps that simply don't work. As an electrician, I frequently get called out to fix DIY lighting disasters where poor quality strips have failed or caused tripping issues.

In properties with solid brick walls—common in our local Victorian terraces—chasing wires for new wall lights is a messy, expensive job. Smart LED strips offer a brilliant alternative, allowing you to add ambient lighting to alcoves, kitchen cabinets, or coving without the need for extensive replastering.

In this review, I've selected three LED strip options that I'm comfortable recommending. I've looked at electrical safety, ease of connection (crucial in homes with thick stone walls that block WiFi), and build quality. Whether you need a simple backlight for your TV or a full room 20-metre run, these are the best options available.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "Self-Adhesive Backing"

The Theory

"Manufacturers claim the 3M tape on the back will stick to any surface indefinitely."

The Reality

In reality, especially on the dusty or lime plaster found in older properties, this tape fails after a few months as the LEDs heat up. I always recommend using a dedicated aluminium profile or additional fixing clips for a permanent installation.

The Spec: "Cut-to-Length"

The Theory

"You can cut the strip at any marked point to fit your space perfectly."

The Reality

Whilst true, cutting completely breaks the water-resistant seal (IP rating) on coated strips. Furthermore, using 'clip-on' connectors to rejoin cut pieces is notoriously finicky. Soldering is the only reliable way to join cut strips.

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

Tapo L900-5 LED Strip Light 5m, Multicolour Smart Lighting

Budget Pick
Tapo L900-5 LED Strip Light 5m, Multicolour Smart Lighting

Tapo

Tapo (by TP-Link) is a brand I frequently encounter in smart homes because their connectivity is rock solid. This 5m strip is perfect for TV backlighting or kitchen kickboards. It connects directly to WiFi without needing an expensive hub, making it an excellent entry point for beginners.

Price£13.49 (at time of writing)
BrandTapo
Length5 Metres
ControlWiFi, Alexa, Google Assistant
The Good
  • No hub required (connects directly to WiFi)
  • Excellent app interface that is reliable
  • Good brightness levels for the price point
The Bad
  • Not waterproof (keep away from sinks/bathrooms)
  • Lacks a dedicated white LED channel (whites are mixed RGB)

Installer Tip:

Install the controller box accessible! Don't bury it behind a heavy wardrobe. If the WiFi drops, you might need to press the physical button to reset it. Also, avoid bending the strip sharply at 90 degrees; loop it gently to avoid snapping the internal copper tracks.

WiZ Smart RGBIC LED Strip Light, 20 m

Quality Pick
WiZ Smart RGBIC LED Strip Light, 20 m

WiZ

WiZ is owned by Signify (who own Philips Hue), so the quality of the light output is superior. This model features RGBIC, meaning it can display multiple colours simultaneously along the strip (chasing effects). The massive 20m length is perfect for running around the entire ceiling perimeter of a large living room without needing multiple power supplies.

Price£40.79 (at time of writing)
BrandWiZ
Length20 Metres
TechRGBIC, Matter Compatible, WiFi
The Good
  • Protective coating protects LEDs from damage
  • 20m length is fantastic for coving installations
  • RGBIC allows for dynamic, moving colour scenes
The Bad
  • Higher price point, but justified by the length and tech
  • The power supply block is quite large, so plan where to hide it

Installer Tip:

DO NOT plug this in fast when it is still coiled up on the plastic reel. A 20m strip generates significant heat; if rolled up, it can melt the insulation and cause a fire hazard. Always unspool it fully before testing.

BATHEBRIGHT 10M LED Strip Lights Music Sync

Problem-Solving
BATHEBRIGHT 10M LED Strip Lights Music Sync

BATHEBRIGHT

This is the problem-solver for when you want fun lighting without messing around with router settings, passwords, or complex smart home integration. It relies on Bluetooth/IR and features a 'Music Sync' mode. Essentially, it solves the problem: 'How do I light up a student room or party venue for under a tenner without technical headaches?'

Price£9.99 (at time of writing)
BrandBATHEBRIGHT
ControlApp (Bluetooth) & IR Remote
FeatureMusic Sync
The Good
  • Incredibly cheap for 10 metres of lighting
  • Music sync works well for parties or entertainment rooms
  • No reliance on WiFi signal (good for cellars or garden rooms)
The Bad
  • Not true 'Smart' (no Alexa/Google integration via WiFi)
  • Adhesive is basic; will likely need extra support on porous walls

Installer Tip:

Since this uses an IR (Infrared) remote, you must ensure the little receiver 'eye' on the controller box is visible and not hidden behind the TV, or the remote won't work. It relies on line-of-sight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I plug LED strip lights into a normal socket?
Yes, all the options reviewed here come with a plug-in driver (transformer). However, for a cleaner 'professional' look in your living room, we can install a fused spur behind your TV or up near the ceiling so no wires are visible. This complies with BS 7671 standards and looks much tidier.
Do smart LED lights use much electricity?
Very little. LEDs are incredibly efficient. Even a long 5-metre run typically uses less power than a single old-fashioned 60W lightbulb. They are a cost-effective way to add brightness to a room without significantly increasing your energy bill.
Why do my LED strips keep falling off the wall?
This is a common issue in Leeds, particularly on older plaster or wallpaper. The adhesive on the back of the strip softens when the lights get warm. I recommend buying a cheap aluminium profile channel to stick the lights into, or using small screw-in mounting clips for a secure fit that won't sag over time.
What is the difference between RGB and RGBIC?
Standard RGB (like the budget options) changes the entire strip to one colour at a time—the whole strip is red, or blue, etc. RGBIC (like the WiZ model) has chips that can display different colours on different segments of the same strip simultaneously, allowing for rainbow or 'chasing' effects.
Do I need a hub for smart lights?
Not for the products listed here. The Tapo and WiZ strips connect directly to your WiFi. However, if you have a very large house with poor WiFi signal in the corners, you might find they occasionally go 'offline'. In those cases, a mesh WiFi system helps maintain connection.
Can I install these in a bathroom?
Only if they are specifically IP rated (usually IP65 or higher) and the power supply is kept outside the zones. Most standard strips are IP20 and are NOT safe for bathrooms where moisture is present. Always consult an electrician for bathroom lighting to ensure safety compliance.
