Switching to an electric vehicle is exciting, but the terminology around chargers can be confusing. Tethered vs socketed, smart scheduling, solar integration, and load balancing—it is a lot to take in. A poor choice can result in nuisance tripping, melted components, or simply a charger that refuses to connect to your WiFi.

In my trade, I frequently visit homes to fix botched installations or replace cheap units that have failed after a deeper-than-average Yorkshire winter. The reality is that an EV charger draws a high continuous current (often 32 Amps) for hours at a time. This puts a significant strain on your home's electrical system, meaning quality components are non-negotiable.

In this review, I have analysed three popular smart chargers available on the market. I have categorised them into a budget-friendly option, a premium choice with all the bells and whistles, and a solid problem-solving unit for those looking to utilise solar energy.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "Installation 'Ease'"

The Theory

"Many products claim to be 'easy to install' with simple mounting templates."

The Reality

Installing an EV charger is NOT a DIY task. It requires notification to the DNO (Distribution Network Operator), Part P compliance, and specialised testing equipment to ensure earth loop impedance is safe. Always hire a qualified electrician.

The Spec: "WiFi Connectivity"

The Theory

"Smart chargers claim seamless connection to apps for scheduling and monitoring."

The Reality

If your charger is on an outside wall and your router is deep inside a stone-built Victorian house, the signal often fails. Consider hardwiring a data cable or choosing a charger with 4G capability if your WiFi is weak outdoors.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

WISSENERGY 7.4kW Smart EV Wallbox for Type 2 Electric Vehicle

Budget Pick
WISSENERGY 7.4kW Smart EV Wallbox for Type 2 Electric Vehicle

WISSENERGY

If you are strictly looking to keep upfront costs down, the WISSENERGY wallbox offers the basic necessity of 7.4kW charging without the premium price tag. It is a no-frills unit that relies on Bluetooth rather than WiFi, which limits its 'smart' capabilities but simplifies the setup for those who aren't tech-savvy.

Price£259.00 (at the time of writing)
ConnectionBluetooth Only (No WiFi)
IP RatingIP66 (High weather resistance)
CompatibilityType 2 Vehicles
The Good
  • Very affordable entry point for home charging
  • High IP66 rating is excellent for exposed driveways
  • Simple app interface for setting timers and current limit
The Bad
  • Bluetooth only means you cannot check charging status remotely (must be near the unit)
  • Short 1-metre cable configuration is restrictive for parking
  • Lacks advanced solar integration features

Installer Tip:

Since this unit uses Bluetooth, you won't be able to turn on the heating in your car from your office desk via the charger app. However, the IP66 rating is superior to many expensive units, making it a decent choice for very exposed, wet locations if you don't mind the lack of remote WiFi access.

Sync Energy EV Wall Charger 2, Socketed Smart EV Charger with WiFi/4G

Quality Choice
Sync Energy EV Wall Charger 2, Socketed Smart EV Charger with WiFi/4G

Sync Energy

This is a proper piece of kit backed by BG (British General), a massive name in the UK electrical industry. The inclusion of 4G connectivity alongside WiFi and LAN makes it incredibly reliable for connection, which is often the biggest headache with smart chargers. It looks the part and performs flawlessly.

Price£469.99 (at the time of writing)
ConnectivityWiFi, LAN & 4G
TypeSocketed (Untethered)
SolarIntegrated Solar Function
The Good
  • 4G connectivity provides backup if home WiFi doesn't reach the driveway
  • Backed by a reputable UK electrical brand (BG)
  • Socketed design allows for a tidy driveway with no trailing cables
The Bad
  • Higher upfront cost
  • Requires you to use your own Type 2 cable (as it is socketed)

Installer Tip:

The 4G capability is a game-changer for stone properties in Leeds where WiFi signals struggle to penetrate external walls. It saves the hassle and cost of running an additional data cable or installing WiFi boosters just for the car charger.

Masterplug Smart EV Home Wall Charger (Socket Only)

Problem-solving
Masterplug Smart EV Home Wall Charger (Socket Only)

Masterplug

Masterplug is another trusted household name, and this unit hits the sweet spot between price and functionality. It solves the 'ugly driveway' problem with its neat socket-only design and solves the 'energy cost' problem with robust solar integration and scheduling, all without breaking the £350 mark.

Price£349.99 (at the time of writing)
Warranty3 Years
ConnectivityWiFi, LAN & Bluetooth
RatingIP55 Weatherproof
The Good
  • Excellent solar integration to minimise charging costs
  • Socketed design keeps the front of the house looking tidy
  • 3-year warranty offers peace of mind
The Bad
  • IP55 rating is slightly lower than the WISSENERGY (IP66) but sufficient for most walls
  • Requires a strong WiFi signal or LAN cable tailored to the location

Installer Tip:

For tight terraced streets or narrow driveways, a 'socketed' unit like this is far better than a tethered one. You don't have a heavy cable permanently coiled up on the wall, looking untidy and potentially getting damaged. You just plug in your lead when you need it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a specific fuse upgrade for a 7kW charger?
Often, yes. A 7kW charger draws 32 Amps. If your house has an older 60 Amp main fuse (common in older Leeds properties), adding a charger could blow the main fuse if you use the electric shower and cooker simultaneously. At OR Electrics, we check your incoming supply and can arrange a free fuse upgrade with the DNO if required.
What is the difference between tethered and socketed chargers?
A tethered charger has the cable permanently attached. It is convenient as you just grab and plug. A socketed (untethered) charger acts like a standard socket; you plug your own cable in. Socketed is generally preferred in areas where aesthetics matter or where the charger is on the front elevation of the house, as it looks much neater.
Can I install an EV charger myself?
No. Installing an EV charger is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. It involves high currents and specific earthing requirements (PEN fault protection) to prevent electric shocks. It must be installed and signed off by a qualified electrician to ensure your home insurance remains valid.
How much generally does installation cost?
Installation costs vary depending on the distance from your fuse board (Consumer Unit) to the charger location and whether we need to drill through thick stone walls. A simple back-to-back install is cheaper than running armoured cable down a garden. Contact us for a specific quote.
What happens if I have solar panels?
Smart chargers like the Sync Energy and Masterplug models reviewed here can talk to your solar inverter (usually via a CT clamp). They can detect when you are exporting excess energy to the grid and divert that free power into your car instead, drastically reducing your running costs.
