Screwless light switches have become massively popular in recent years. They offer a clean, modern aesthetic that hides unsightly fixing screws, making them a favourite for newly plastered rooms and high-spec renovations.

However, not all screwless switches are created equal. In older properties, particularly the back-to-back terraces we see across Leeds with uneven plasterwork, some flat-plate switches simply won't sit flush. This can leave gaps that aren't just ugly—they can allow moisture or dust ingress.

In this review, I'll walk you through three options I've installed personally: a budget-friendly choice that looks the part, a premium Schneider unit that I trust for reliability, and a slimline option that solves the headache of shallow back boxes.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "Flat/Screwless Profile"

The Theory

"The switch sits perfectly flat against the wall for a seamless look."

The Reality

This only works if your plastering is perfectly flat. On bumpy Victorian walls, a completely flat plate will show gaps. You often need a slightly raised edge or 'deco' style to hide imperfections.

The Spec: "Clip-on Fascia"

The Theory

"You can paint the removal cover easily and clip it back on."

The Reality

Whilst great for painting, cheap clips can snap or become loose over time. Always check the build quality of the clipping mechanism before buying.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

EAGLE 2 Gang 2 Way 10A Light Switch Screwless Plate with Brushed Chrome Finish

Budget Pick
EAGLE 2 Gang 2 Way 10A Light Switch Screwless Plate with Brushed Chrome Finish

Eagle

If you are renovating on a tight budget but want that premium crushed chrome look, this Eagle switch is a solid contender. It provides the modern screwless aesthetic without the heavy price tag usually associated with designer fittings.

Price£5.99 (at time of writing)
BrandEagle
FinishBrushed Chrome
Rating10A
The Good
  • Excellent price point for a double switch
  • Clean brushed chrome finish looks more expensive than it is
  • Standard UK fitting layout
The Bad
  • The clipping mechanism feels slightly less robust than premium brands
  • Brushed finish can show fingerprints if not handled by the edges

Installer Tip:

When installing these budget plates, be very gentle when unclipping the front fascia to access the screw holes. Use a small flat-head screwdriver and twist specifically at the leverage point to avoid marking the chrome.

Schneider Electric Lisse Screwless Deco - Double 2 Way Light Switch, 10AX, Stainless Steel with White Insert

Quality Pick
Schneider Electric Lisse Screwless Deco - Double 2 Way Light Switch, 10AX, Stainless Steel with White Insert

Schneider Electric

Schneider is a brand we professionals trust implicitly. The Lisse Deco range features a clever 7mm raised edge which helps mask slight unevenness in the wall—a common issue in Leeds properties—whilst maintaining that screwless appearance.

Price£16.49 (at time of writing)
BrandSchneider Electric
FinishStainless Steel
Special Feature7mm Raised Edge Plate
The Good
  • Superior internal mechanism for long-term reliability
  • Raised edge profile is forgiving on uneven walls
  • High-quality stainless steel finish resists tarnishing
The Bad
  • Higher price point per unit
  • White insert is visible (though some prefer this contrast)

Installer Tip:

This is the 'Deco' range, which sits slightly prouder than a totally flat plate. This is actually a massive advantage in older homes where plaster isn't perfect, as it creates a tidy shadow gap rather than exposing a hairline crack between the switch and the wall.

Knightsbridge SF2000BC Screwless 10 A 1-Gang 2 Way Switch, Brushed Chrome

Problem-solving Pick
Knightsbridge SF2000BC Screwless 10 A 1-Gang 2 Way Switch, Brushed Chrome

Knightsbridge

In many of the Victorian back-to-backs in Leeds, solid brick walls make chasing out deep back boxes a nightmare. This Knightsbridge unit requires only a minimum mounting box of 16mm, making it an absolute lifesaver for shallow recesses.

Price£7.95 (at time of writing)
BrandKnightsbridge
Min Depth16mm Back Box
FinishBrushed Chrome
The Good
  • Works with shallow 16mm back boxes
  • Ideal for solid brick walls where chasing is difficult
  • Ultra-slim premium grade material
The Bad
  • Ideally requires an intermediate switch for 3-way lighting (sold separately)
  • Tight wiring space if used with 2.5mm cable in a shallow box

Installer Tip:

Whilst this fits a 16mm box, I always recommend dressing your cables neatly at the back of the box before offering up the faceplate. With such a slim profile, trapped wires can press against the back of the switch, causing the screwless cover to pop off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do screwless switches require special back boxes?
Generally, standard back boxes work, but depth is key. Screwless switches (flat plate) often have the mechanism sitting further back into the wall. I rarely recommend anything shallower than 25mm, and 35mm is ideal to give your cables breathing room.
Can I fit screwless switches on any wall?
You can, but the wall needs to be flat. If you try to force a flat metal plate onto a bowed wall (common in old Leeds terraces), the front clip-on fascia won't stay attached. In those cases, the Schneider 'Deco' range mentioned above is a better bet.
Are metal switches earthed?
Yes, absolutely. Any metal accessory must be earthed to ensure that if a live wire comes loose and touches the faceplate, the fuse strips rather than giving you a shock. If your home has old wiring without an earth cable in the lighting circuit (common in pre-1960s builds), you cannot install these switches safely.
Why do my screwless switch covers keep falling off?
This is usually because the grid plate (the bit screwed to the wall) has been tightened too much, warping the metal frame. If the frame bends, the plastic clips on the cover can't engage. Loosen the fixing screws slightly to let the frame settle back to flat.
I need a full house rewire in Leeds; can you supply these?
Yes, at OR Electrics, we can supply and fit any brand you choose as part of a rewire package. We often recommend Schneider for longevity, but we are happy to work with your preferred aesthetic.
