Smart lighting is brilliant, but pulling out your phone just to dim the lights is a faff, frankly. Most of my clients in Leeds want the convenience of Alexa or app control, but they still want a physical knob on the wall to turn the lights up and down. That's where rotary smart dimmers come in.

However, UK wiring can be tricky. Many of the older terraces in Armley or Harehills don't have a neutral wire at the switch, which rules out a lot of American-style smart switches. Plus, finding one that fits a shallow 25mm back box in a solid brick wall is a challenge in itself.

In this review, I'm looking at three distinct options: a simple manual in-line fix for lamps, a proper 'no-neutral' wall switch that works with WiFi, and a wireless Zigbee dial that solves the problem of chasing wires into solid walls.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "No Neutral Required"

The Theory

"You can swap your old switch for a smart one without any new wiring."

The Reality

Whilst true, 'no neutral' switches draw a tiny current through the bulb to stay powered. If your LED bulbs are low quality or very low wattage, they might flicker or glow when off. You may need a 'bypass capacitor' at the light fitting.

The Spec: "Works with all LEDs"

The Theory

"The dimmer will smoothly dim any LED bulb from 0% to 100%."

The Reality

Not all LEDs are 'dimmable'. Using non-dimmable LEDs with these switches causes buzzing and strobing. Always check your bulbs are rated for dimming before blaming the switch.

HAMPPLIES Led Strip Dimmer Rotary Controller for Table Lamp and Rope Light

Budget Pick
HAMPPLIES Led Strip Dimmer Rotary Controller for Table Lamp and Rope Light

HAMPPLIES

This isn't a smart wall switch, but it's a brilliant budget fix for controlling plug-in LED strips or table lamps that are too bright. It offers manual rotary control in a simple in-line form factor. If you're building a custom LED setup for a desk or shelf and just want a physical knob without the fuss of apps, this is the one.

Price£4.39 (at time of writing)
TypeIn-line Manual Controller
ApplicationLED Strips / Desk Lamps
The Good
  • Extremely affordable
  • Simple, reliable mechanical operation
  • Good for custom LED strip projects
The Bad
  • Not 'smart' (no WiFi or App control)
  • Requires wiring into the cable (DIY execution)
  • Not for mains wall switching

Installer Tip:

This is purely for low-voltage or specific lamp cord applications. Don't try to wire this directly into your mains lighting circuit ring main—it's not designed for that. It's great for adding a dimmer to a plug-in cabinet light.

Candeo WiFi Smart Rotary Dimmer Switch | No Neutral Required

Quality Choice
Candeo WiFi Smart Rotary Dimmer Switch | No Neutral Required

Candeo

This is hands-down the best option for retrofitting into UK homes. It addresses the two biggest headaches we face in Leeds: lack of neutral wires and shallow 25mm back boxes. It looks and feels like a traditional premium dimmer but connects to WiFi for full Alexa/Google integration.

Price£38.99 (at time of writing)
ConnectivityWiFi (No Hub Needed)
WiringNo Neutral Required
LoadLED & Incandescent up to 200W
The Good
  • Does not require a neutral wire (huge plus for older properties)
  • Fits standard 25mm UK back boxes
  • Two-way switching capability
The Bad
  • Higher price point per switch
  • Requires 2.4GHz WiFi network (standard, but worth noting)

Installer Tip:

If you install this and the lights flicker, don't panic. You likely just need to adjust the 'minimum brightness' setting in the app. Also, ensure you are using high-quality dimmable LEDs; cheap tailored bulbs often struggle with trailing edge dimmers.

Smart for Zigbee Wireless Dimmer Switch for LED Bulbs

Problem-Solving Pick
Smart for Zigbee Wireless Dimmer Switch for LED Bulbs

BlissfulAbode

A brilliant solution for adding a switch where cables don't exist. This battery-powered rotary knob communicates via Zigbee. It's perfect for solid brick walls in Leeds terraces where chasing out new cable routes is messy and expensive. Stick it anywhere to control your smart bulbs.

Price£14.29 (at time of writing)
ProtocolZigbee (Requires Hub)
InstallationWireless / Stick-on
The Good
  • Install anywhere without cutting into walls
  • Clean rotary control for smart bulbs
  • Can trigger scenes via the app
The Bad
  • Requires a Zigbee hub (doesn't work efficiently via WiFi direct)
  • Battery powered (will eventually need changing)

Installer Tip:

This is a 'scene controller'. It doesn't cut power to the bulb; it sends a signal to the bulb to dim. This solves the issue of family members turning off smart bulbs at the wall switch, which renders them offline. Blank off the old switch and put this over the top for a seamless smart lighting experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a neutral wire for a smart dimmer?
Not anymore. Options like the Candeo (reviewed above) are designed specifically for UK wiring where neutral wires are rarely found at the switch. They work by harvesting a tiny amount of power from the live wire.
Can I use any LED bulb with a rotary smart dimmer?
No, you must use 'dimmable' LEDs. If you use non-dimmable bulbs, they will likely strobe or buzz. For the best experience, I recommend established brands like Philips, Osram, or Megaman.
Why do my lights flicker with a smart dimmer?
This usually happens if the total wattage of your bulbs is too low (common with efficient LEDs). The switch needs a minimum load to function. You can often fix this by installing a 'bypass' (a small capacitor) at the light fitting, or by adjusting the minimum dimming level in the switch's app.
What is the difference between WiFi and Zigbee dimmers?
WiFi dimmers connect directly to your router—easy to set up but can clutter your network if you have dozens. Zigbee dimmers use a separate low-power mesh network (requiring a hub), which is faster and more reliable for large lighting systems.
Can OR Electrics install these for me?
Absolutely. Whether it's retrofitting your existing switches or designing a full smart lighting system for a renovation, our team in Leeds is happy to help safely install and configure your devices.
Are smart rotary dimmers worth the cost?
In my opinion, yes. They offer the best of both worlds: the familiar, instant control of a manual knob for guests and family, combined with the automation and remote control of a smart home system.
