If you are upgrading your home with smart lighting modules like Shelly, Fibaro, or Sonoff, you quickly realise that standard rocker switches just don't feel right. You flick them 'on', then use the app to turn the light 'off', and suddenly your switch is in the wrong position. It's a small nuisance, but one that drives my customers mad.

The solution is a retractive switch (often called a momentary switch). These spring back to the off position immediately after you press them, sending a pulse to your smart dimmer or relay. It sounds simple, but finding high-quality retractive switches that don't feel cheap or get stuck can be a challenge, especially when trying to match existing décor.

In this review, I'm looking at three options I've installed in homes across Leeds. I've chosen a solid budget option, a premium finish for modern renovations, and a modular solution that helps solve tricky wiring configurations.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "Compatible with standard back boxes"

The Theory

"Manufacturers fit standard 25mm or 35mm boxes."

The Reality

Whilst the switch fits, once you add a smart puck (like a Shelly Dimmer) behind it, a 35mm box is often too tight. In the solid brick walls we see in Leeds, you almost always need a 47mm deep box for comfortable wiring.

The Spec: "Silent Operation"

The Theory

"Retractive switches are quiet and smooth."

The Reality

Most still have a distinct 'click'. Cheaper models can sound quite metallic. If the mechanism is stiff, it can feel like you are fighting the wall every time you turn the lights on.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

BG Electrical Single Retractive Bell Push Switch, Nexus Metal BS

Budget Pick
BG Electrical Single Retractive Bell Push Switch, Nexus Metal BS

British General

This is the trade secret for getting smart switching on a budget. Although technically labelled a 'Bell Push', it functions exactly as a retractive single-pole switch needed for smart relays. It's robust, affordable, and the brushed steel finish looks far more expensive than it is.

Price£3.42 (at time of writing)
FinishBrushed Steel (Nexus Metal)
ProfileRaised Slim Profile
Warranty25 Years
The Good
  • Incredible value for money
  • Moisture gasket included (great for newly plastered walls)
  • Solid mechanical feel that returns reliably
The Bad
  • Features a 'Bell' symbol on the button (aesthetic downside)
  • Raised profile isn't as sleek as flat plate options

Installer Tip:

Use this for utility rooms or areas where function trumps form. The 'Bell' symbol puts some homeowners off using it in a lounge, but mechanically, it's brilliant for triggering smart relays without breaking the bank.

Soho Lighting White Metal Flat Plate 2 Gang Retractive Light Switch

Quality Pick
Soho Lighting White Metal Flat Plate 2 Gang Retractive Light Switch

The Soho Lighting Company

For a high-end finish in a living room or kitchen, this Soho Lighting switch is top tier. It uses a grid system hidden behind a stunning screwless white metal plate. It's designed specifically for smart homes, so the action is smooth and reliable without any confusing symbols.

Price£26.00 (at time of writing)
Gangs2 Gang
StyleScrewless Flat Plate
TypeModular Grid System
The Good
  • Clean, screwless aesthetic looks fantastic in modern homes
  • Modular grid system allows for easier maintenance
  • Robust mechanism designed for frequent use
The Bad
  • Significantly higher cost per unit
  • Flat plate design requires perfectly flat walls

Installer Tip:

Flat plate switches are unforgiving on uneven walls. In many Leeds terraces, the plaster is rarely perfectly flat. You must ensure your back box is sunk slightly deeper than usual to allow the plate to pull flush against the wall without bowing.

Soho Lighting White Metal Flat Plate 1 Gang Retractive Light Switch

Problem-solving Pick
Soho Lighting White Metal Flat Plate 1 Gang Retractive Light Switch

The Soho Lighting Company

This is the single-gang version of the Soho range, but I've labelled it problem-solving because of its modular nature. Being a grid switch system provided separately means as an installer, I can swap modules or orientation if the room layout changes, whilst maintaining that high-end look.

Price£19.00 (at time of writing)
Gangs1 Gang
StyleScrewless Flat Plate
InsertBlack Insert
The Good
  • Modular assembly allows flexibility during installation
  • High-quality construction reduces mechanism failure
  • Matches the 2-gang version for consistent home styling
The Bad
  • Assembly required (comes as separate parts)
  • Requires deep back box for comfortable cabling

Installer Tip:

When fitting these grid switches, take care not to pinch the cables behind the yoke. Because it is a flat plate, there is zero void behind the front cover, so all your cable management must happen strictly inside the back box.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a retractive switch and a rocker switch?
A standard rocker switch stays in the position you flip it to (on or off). A retractive (or momentary) switch is spring-loaded and returns to its original position immediately after pressing. Retractive switches are essential for smart lighting modules, as they send a pulse command rather than holding a live connection.
Can I use a bell push as a light switch?
Technically, yes, if you are using smart lighting relays. A bell push is simply a 'push-to-make' retractive switch. As long as the voltage and current rating are suitable for your smart module (which they almost always are), it works perfectly. The only downside is the aesthetic of having a bell symbol in your living room.
Do I need deeper back boxes for retractive smart switches?
Yes, usually. The switch itself isn't the issue, but the smart module (like a Shelly or Sonoff) that sits behind it takes up space. In older homes with solid brick walls, I recommend deepening the back box to at least 47mm to prevent crushing the cables and ensuring safety.
Do these switches work with Philips Hue?
Not directly. These are hardwired mains voltage switches. To use them with Philips Hue, you would need a 'Philips Hue Wall Switch Module' installed behind the switch. This module converts the physical click into a Zigbee signal that the Hue bulbs understand.
Why do you recommend metal switches in older houses?
Metal switches, like the BG Nexus or Soho range, are more durable than plastic. However, they must be earthed. In some very old properties in Leeds, the lighting circuits lack an earth wire (CPC). If you don't have an earth wire at the switch, you cannot use metal faceplates for safety reasons.
