If you live in Leeds or anywhere in the UK, you know that keeping moisture out of outdoor electrics is a constant battle. I get called out to 'nuisance tripping' faults weekly, and nine times out of ten, it's a spider or a slug that's crawled into a junction box, or condensation that's bridged the connections.

The professional solution? Resin potting. Whilst proper armoured cable joints (like resin straight joints) are essential for burying mains cables, two-part epoxy resin kits are incredibly useful for 'potting' (filling) junction boxes and sealing LED driver enclosures to make them completely watertight.

In this review, I'm looking at three resin kits available to the public. Whilst often marketed for crafts, the chemistry is what matters—a solid, non-conductive, waterproof seal. Here are my top picks for sealing your outdoor lighting connections.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "IP68 Rating"

The Theory

"A junction box rated IP68 is supposed to be fully submersible and waterproof without needing resin."

The Reality

In the damp Yorkshire climate, rubber seals perish, and thermal expansion sucks moist air in. Within a year, 'waterproof' boxes often have water inside. Resin filling eliminates the air gap, making it physically impossible for water to enter.

The Spec: "Hardness / Curing"

The Theory

"Epoxy creates a 'rock hard' finish for protection."

The Reality

This is great for permanent waterproofing, but remember: once it's potted, it's permanent. You cannot change a wire or replace a fuse without cutting the whole box out. Only pot connections you are 100% happy with.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

Epoxy Resin Kit 16oz/474ml - Crystal Clear Resin and Hardener Resin Epoxy kit

Budget Pick
Epoxy Resin Kit 16oz/474ml - Crystal Clear Resin and Hardener Resin Epoxy kit

UMIKEL

This kit offers excellent value for smaller potting jobs. If you just have two or three junction boxes to seal on a deck lighting circuit, the 474ml volume is plenty without leaving you with loads of waste.

Price£8.99 (at the time of writing)
Volume474ml total (237ml Resin + 237ml Hardener)
Work Time30-40 minutes
The Good
  • Very affordable for small DIY electrical sealing
  • Clear mix allows visual inspection of connections before it sets
  • Self-levelling nature helps it flow around terminal blocks
The Bad
  • Curing time slows significantly in cold Leeds garages
  • Hard sets permanently (difficult to remove if you make a wiring mistake)

Installer Tip:

Before pouring, ensure your cable glands are tight. This resin is runny enough to seep out of loose glands before it cures, potentially making a mess of your patio.

Resiners Epoxy Resin Starter Kit, 1L Crystal Clear Resin Kits for Beginners

Quality Pick
Resiners Epoxy Resin Starter Kit, 1L Crystal Clear Resin Kits for Beginners

Resiners

For larger garden lighting installations involving multiple spike lights or distribution boxes, this 1L kit is the professional choice. The larger volume means you can mix enough batches to do a whole run of lights in one session.

Price£19.99 (at the time of writing)
Volume1 Litre total
FormulaNon-yellowing, Bubble-free
The Good
  • Excellent flow viscosity gets right into wago connectors
  • 1 Litre quantity is ideal for multiple junction boxes
  • High gloss finish repels water effectively
The Bad
  • Includes craft moulds which are unnecessary for electrical work
  • Higher upfront cost if you only have one connection to seal

Installer Tip:

This resin mimics the properties of professional electrical potting compounds well. When mixing, scrape the sides of the cup thoroughly. Unmixed resin won't cure and will leave a sticky, conductive mess inside your junction box.

Roizefar Epoxy Resin Kit, 480ml Crystal Clear Resin Kits for Beginners

Problem-Solving
Roizefar Epoxy Resin Kit, 480ml Crystal Clear Resin Kits for Beginners

Roizefar

Sometimes you're up a ladder or at the bottom of the garden and you realise you don't have mixing gear. This kit is a problem solver because it comes with everything: gloves, cups, and sticks. It's a 'grab and go' solution for sealing repairs.

Price£14.99 (at the time of writing)
Work Time40 minutes
Cure Time24 hours
The Good
  • Full kit includes gloves and measuring cups (saves hunting for tools)
  • Good 40-minute working time allows for precise pouring
  • Hard, scratch-resistant finish once cured
The Bad
  • Contains glitter and pigments (do not use these in your electrics!)
  • Slightly more expensive per ml than the budget option

Installer Tip:

Discard the glitter and focus on the clear resin! Use the included droppers to inject resin into particularly small connector housings where a standard pour creates air pockets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use these resin kits for burying mains cables?
No. For underground mains cable joints (230V), you must use a BS 6910 approved cable joint kit (like a Scotchcast or Prysmian kit) which comes with a specific shell and resin designed for electrical insulation underground. The resins reviewed here are excellent for 'potting' junction boxes and low-voltage lighting connections to keep water out, but should not be used to create a primary mains splice underground.
Why should I pot my garden light connections?
Leeds is wet. Even 'waterproof' junction boxes (IP68) failing is common because thermal expansion pushes air out during the day and sucks damp air in at night. Over time, this builds up water. Filling the box with resin removes the air gap, making water ingress physically impossible. It stops slugs and insects too.
How long does resin take to cure in cold weather?
Most manufacturers state 24 hours at room temperature (20-25°C). In a cold Leeds winter, outdoors, curing can take 48-72 hours or may not cure properly at all. Use a heat gun to gently warm the resin and the junction box before pouring, and try to pick a dry day.
Is resin potting permanent?
Yes, completely. Once you pour the resin into a junction box, you cannot access the screws or wires again. If a fault develops or you want to add another light later, you will have to cut the cable and install a new box. Ensure your testing is perfect before you pour!
