Summer or winter, we all need power outside eventually—whether it's for the lawnmower, the jet washer, or putting up Christmas lights. The temptation to just daisy-chain extension leads through an open window is high, but it's a massive safety risk and a burglary invitation.

Living in Leeds, we know our weather is unforgiving. Damp, rain, and frost can wreak havoc on poor quality electrical fittings. That is why choosing the right IP66-rated outdoor socket isn't just about convenience; it is about preventing nuisance tripping and potential fire hazards.

In this review, I'll walk you through three options to get power into your garden safely: a budget-friendly unit, a high-tech smart socket from a trusted British brand, and a compact single-gang solution for tight spaces.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "IP66 Waterproof Rating"

The Theory

"The box is completely waterproof and will never let water in."

The Reality

IP66 only guarantees protection when the lid is clicked SHUT. Once you have a plug inserted, if the gel seal isn't moulded perfectly around the flex, water can still creep in. Always use 'temporary' use instructions seriously.

The Spec: "DIY Installation"

The Theory

"It's just a spur, anyone can wire it up."

The Reality

Outdoor electrics are 'special locations' under building regs. You must ensure the circuit has RCD protection (30mA) at the consumer unit. If you drill through your wall and hit a damp course or pipe, you are in trouble. Professional testing is vital.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

GREENSAPPIRE Outdoor Waterproof Socket IP66 – 13A Double Switched Plug Socket

Budget Pick
GREENSAPPIRE Outdoor Waterproof Socket IP66 – 13A Double Switched Plug Socket

GREENSAPPIRE

If you just need a standard double socket for run-of-the-mill garden tasks like mowing the lawn, this GREENSAPPIRE unit does the job without breaking the bank. It offers the standard IP66 protection you need to keep the rain out.

Price£7.99 (at time of writing)
BrandGREENSAPPIRE
RatingIP66 / 13 Amp
The Good
  • Very affordable price point
  • Standard layout familiar to use
  • Clear cover allows you to see switch position
The Bad
  • Plastic feels lighter than premium brands
  • Latches can be stiff in cold weather

Installer Tip:

When drilling the back box for cable entry, make sure to drill from the back outwards or use the pre-cut knockouts carefully. Always silicone around the screw holes where you fix it to the brickwork to stop moisture bridging from the wall into the box.

BG Smart! Weatherproof Outdoor Switched Double Socket Polycarbonate

Quality Choice
BG Smart! Weatherproof Outdoor Switched Double Socket Polycarbonate

British General (BG)

BG (British General) is a brand I install regularly. The build quality on this unit is excellent, but the real star feature is the Wi-Fi control. You can turn your fountain, patio heater, or Christmas lights on via Alexa or Google without stepping out into the cold.

Price£33.00 (at time of writing)
BrandBritish General
FeaturesWi-Fi Control, Timer Schedules, IP66
The Good
  • Trusted UK electrical brand (BG)
  • Smart control (Alexa/Google/Siri)
  • Colour-coded terminals make wiring safer/clearer
The Bad
  • Significantly more expensive than standard sockets
  • Requires strong Wi-Fi signal in the garden

Installer Tip:

Before you drill the wall, check your Wi-Fi signal at the installation point with your phone. Victorian solid brick walls in Leeds are notorious for blocking Wi-Fi signals. You might need a Wi-Fi booster if the signal is weak, otherwise the smart features won't work.

CROWNSHOP Outdoor Socket Waterproof 13A 1-gang Switch Single IP66

Problem Solving
CROWNSHOP Outdoor Socket Waterproof 13A 1-gang Switch Single IP66

CROWNSHOP

Sometimes you simply don't have the physical wall space for a large double socket box, for example on a narrow brick pillar or near a door frame. This single-gang option solves that problem, providing power in a tighter footprint.

Price£7.99 (at time of writing)
BrandCROWNSHOP
TypeSingle Gang (1-Gang)
The Good
  • Compact footprint for tight spaces
  • Cheap solution for single appliances (e.g., pond pump)
  • Simple installation
The Bad
  • Only one outlet
  • Generic brand limits long-term parts availability

Installer Tip:

Even though it is small, ensure you leave enough slack on the supply cable. Working inside these smaller boxes can be fiddly if the wires are cut too short. Leave yourself an extra 100mm of cable to make terminating easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an RCD for an outdoor socket?
Absolutely, yes. Under BS 7671 regulations, outdoor sockets must be protected by a 30mA RCD (Residual Current Device). This device saves lives by cutting the power instantly if you cut the cable or if water gets in. If your fuse board (consumer unit) is old and lacks RCDs, we must install a separate RCD spur.
Can I install an outdoor socket myself?
Legally, competent DIYers can do minor works, but adding a new circuit or working in special locations can be complex regarding Part P compliance. Given the high risk of water and electricity mixing, I always recommend having a qualified electrician do the work and issue a Minor Works Certificate.
Why does my outdoor socket keep tripping the power?
This is a classic problem. It is usually one of three things: moisture inside the waterproof box (check the seal), a faulty appliance plugged into it, or—surprisingly common in Leeds—slugs or spiders finding their way inside and bridging the connections. Open it up (with power off!) and check for pests or damp.
How deep do underground cables need to be for a garden socket?
If you are running a cable underground to a shed or freestanding post, it should ideally be buried 600mm deep with warning tape above it, using SWA (Steel Wire Armoured) cable. Never just run standard grey twin and earth along a fence or under soil; it is dangerous and will degrade rapidly.
