Charging an electric vehicle at home is convenient, but for those without a driveway or garage, or those using a 'granny charger' (3-pin plug) on an external wall, security is a massive concern. I frequently visit properties where outdoor sockets have been tampered with or where water ingress has tripped the RCD because the cover wasn't up to scratch.

Unauthorised use of your electricity ('electricity theft') is becoming a genuine worry for homeowners in built-up areas. Furthermore, standard domestic sockets aren't always designed to be locked shut whilst a bulky EV plug is inserted. You need a solution that is weatherproof, robust, and lockable to stop opportunists.

In this review, I've analysed three lockable enclosures suitable for securing your EV charging point. I'll cover a budget options for basic weather protection, a stainless steel upgrade for durability, and a heavy-duty iron solution for high-risk areas.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "Waterproof Ratings (IP66 etc.)"

The Theory

"The manufacturer claims the box is totally waterproof even in heavy rain."

The Reality

Waterproofing is only as good as the seal around the cable. If the EV cable is thick and forces the lid slightly ajar, the seal is compromised. Always ensure the cable entry point is glanded or sealed properly.

The Spec: "Anti-Theft Protection"

The Theory

"A lockable box stops anyone from using your electricity."

The Reality

Plastic boxes are merely a deterrent; a determined thief can smash them in seconds. If you live in a high-risk area, you need a metal enclosure, or better yet, an internal isolator switch to kill power to the socket from inside the house.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

Outdoor Socket Waterproof Box, 86 Type Electric Vehicle Charging Socket Lock Box

Budget Pick
Outdoor Socket Waterproof Box, 86 Type Electric Vehicle Charging Socket Lock Box

Lecreatekit

This is a standard 86-type plastic enclosure designed to fit over existing socket setups. It offers basic weather protection and a locking facility at a very low price. It's suitable for secure rear gardens where vandalism is unlikely, but you want to stop casual tampering or weather damage.

Price£7.89 (at time of writing)
MaterialPolycarbonate (PC)
Size98mm x 95mm x 70mm
The Good
  • Very affordable option for basic protection
  • Transparent cover allows you to see if the charger is active
  • Wide opening angle makes plugging in easier
The Bad
  • Plastic construction is less secure against vandalism
  • May become brittle over time in harsh UK frosts

Installer Tip:

This box is 'retro-fit' style. When installing, make sure you use silicone sealant along the top and side edges where it meets the brickwork to prevent water running down the wall and behind the unit. Leave the bottom open for drainage.

Outdoor Stainless Steel Electrical Protective Socket Box with Secure Lock

Quality Pick
Outdoor Stainless Steel Electrical Protective Socket Box with Secure Lock

BESTYASH

Moving up significantly in quality, this BESTYASH unit uses stainless steel. This is the material I prefer for client installations in Leeds because it doesn't rust easily and withstands accidental knocks far better than plastic. It adds a professional finish to the exterior of a home.

Price£28.16 (at time of writing)
MaterialStainless Steel
FeatureSecure Lock & Elegant Design
The Good
  • Stainless steel offers excellent weather resistance
  • Much harder to break open than plastic alternatives
  • Aesthetically pleasing for modern homes
The Bad
  • Metal enclosures must be properly earthed for safety
  • Higher price point

Installer Tip:

Safety Warning: As this is a metal enclosure, it is absolutely critical that it is earthed properly. If a live wire comes loose inside and touches the metal box, the box becomes live. Ensure your electrician bonds the box to the earth terminal.

Weatherproof Electrical Outlet Lock Box for Ev Charging (Iron Construction)

Problem-solving Pick
Weatherproof Electrical Outlet Lock Box for Ev Charging (Iron Construction)

INOOMP

If your charging point is accessible from a public street or a shared driveway, you need something robust. This INOOMP box features iron construction, making it significantly heavier and tougher than standard covers. It is designed specifically to prevent unauthorised access in semi-public areas.

Price£24.79 (at time of writing)
MaterialIron Construction
ApplicationPublic/Private Parking Areas
The Good
  • Heavy-duty iron construction is very secure
  • Ideal for front driveways or shared parking areas
  • Designed to withstand impact
The Bad
  • Iron can be prone to rust if the paint is chipped (unlike stainless steel)
  • Industrial look might not suit all domestic tastes

Installer Tip:

Due to the iron construction, check the paintwork annually. If you spot any chips from plugging in your EV cable, touch them up with metal paint immediately to prevent rust setting in, especially in our damp UK climate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a standard outdoor socket for EV charging?
Technically, yes, for 'granny charging' (using a 3-pin plug). However, standard domestic sockets are not designed for the continuous high load of charging a car for 8-10 hours. I strongly recommend getting a dedicated EV charging socket which is robust, or better yet, a dedicated wallbox charger install.
Why do I need a lockable socket box?
Two reasons: safety and theft. It stops children tampering with the high-voltage connection, and it prevents neighbours or passers-by from stealing your electricity to charge their own devices or vehicles.
Is an EV charging point required to be on its own circuit?
Yes. Under BS 7671 regulations, your EV charger (even a socket intended for EV use) should be on a dedicated radial circuit from the consumer unit. It usually requires Type A or Type B RCD protection and often PEN conductor fault protection.
Do metal socket boxes need earthing?
Absolutely. This is non-negotiable. If you install a metal enclosure (Class I equipment), it must be connected to the earth of the electrical installation. If a fault occurs, this ensures the breaker trips rather than the box becoming live and dangerous.
Does OR Electrics install these in Leeds?
Yes. We can install secure outdoor sockets or dedicated EV wallboxes throughout Leeds, from Victorian terraces to new builds. We ensure all work is notification-ready for Building Control.
