With the dark winter nights we get here in the UK, a reliable security light isn't just a luxury; it's a necessity. Whether it's discouraging intruders or simply helping you find your keys without tripping on the path, good lighting is essential.

However, the market is flooded with cheap, unreliable units that fill with water or flicker constantly. As an electrician in Leeds, I'm often called out to replace DIY store lights that have failed after just one winter, usually tripping the RCD and knocking out the whole house's power in the process.

In this review, I've selected three LED floodlights that offer genuine value and performance. I'll cover a budget-friendly replacement for old halogens, a high-power option for large gardens, and an adjustable unit for tricky corners.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "Lumen Claims (Brightness)"

The Theory

"Manufacturers often claim massive brightness figures (e.g., 20,000 lumens) for budget lights."

The Reality

In reality, a quality 50W LED producing around 4,000-5,000 lumens is more than enough for a typical semi-detached driveway. Do not be blinded by high numbers; look for build quality first.

The Spec: "No Earth Required"

The Theory

"Some modern units are Class II (Double Insulated) and state they don't need an earth wire."

The Reality

Whilst strictly true for the manufacturing of that specific unit, your circuit still needs a continuous earth for safety. As an electrician, I always verify the circuit integrity before connecting Class II equipment.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

Budget Pick
50W Security Lights Outdoor Motion Sensor, 4500 Lumens

AUXHCYL

If you are looking to replace an old 500W halogen energ-guzzler with something efficient, this AUXHCYL unit is a solid choice. It offers ample brightness for a standard driveway or back garden without overcomplicating things.

Price£14.99 (at time of writing)
Power50W LED (4500 Lumens)
IP RatingIP66 (Waterproof)
Sensor TypePIR with Time/Lux/Sens adjustments
The Good
  • Excellent value for money
  • High IP66 rating suitable for exposed Yorkshire walls
  • Energy savings up to 85% compared to old halogens
The Bad
  • Cable is often short (1 metre), requiring a nearby junction box
  • Manual dials on the sensor can be fiddly to fine-tune

Installer Tip:

These units come with a pre-wired flex. Do not cut it too short. Use a proper IP66 rated outdoor junction box (like a Wiska box) to join this to your house wiring. Taping it up is not sufficient and will cause nuisance tripping when it rains.

Security Lights 200W, Led Floodlight with PIR Motion Sensor & Remote

Quality Pick
Security Lights 200W, Led Floodlight with PIR Motion Sensor & Remote

Viugreum

For large properties or long driveways where standard lights fail to reach, this 200W beast is the answer. The included remote control is a game-changer, allowing you to adjust settings without climbing a ladder—a massive safety bonus.

Price£39.98 (at time of writing)
BrightnessUp to 20,000 Lumens (Claimed)
ControlPIR Sensor + Remote Control
Heads3 Adjustable Heads
The Good
  • Remote control allows easy adjustment of sensitivity and timer
  • Extremely bright coverage for large areas
  • 3 adjustable heads allow you to direct light around corners
The Bad
  • Physically large unit on the wall
  • Potentially too bright for small terraced gardens (risk of annoying neighbours)

Installer Tip:

Positioning is critical with a light this bright. If you live in a dense area like Headingley or Harehills, angle the heads downwards sharply to ensure you light your property without blinding your neighbours or passing traffic.

100W Led Security Lights with Motion Sensor, 3 Adjustable Heads

Problem-Solver
100W Led Security Lights with Motion Sensor, 3 Adjustable Heads

MEIKEE

This unit solves the common problem of reliable coverage in awkwardly shaped gardens. With fully adjustable heads that can rotate significantly, you can light up a side alley and a back garden simultaneously from a single corner install.

Price£36.12 (at time of writing)
Housing MaterialNano Material / Double Insulated
Adjustability180° / 270° Beam Angle
Guarantee2 Years
The Good
  • Incredible flexibility for L-shaped gardens or corners
  • Class II design (Double Insulated) - useful if earthing is tricky on older extensions
  • Wide 270-degree beam angle
The Bad
  • Plastic-feel housing may not appeal to those preferring traditional metal
  • Sensor can be sensitive to wind-blown foliage due to wide detection range

Installer Tip:

Use the 'Test' mode during the day to get your angles right. Because this light has three heads, it's easy to accidentally point one directly at a neighbour's window. Walk the perimeter of your property once installed to check the cut-off lines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my security light keep staying on?
This is a classic nuisance issue. Usually, it's because the sensitivity (LUX or SENS) is set too high, detecting swaying bushes or even moths close to the lens. Try angling the sensor slightly downwards and reducing the sensitivity dial.
Can I install a security light myself?
Replacing an existing light is often considered minor works, but adding a new circuit or working outdoors can fall under specific building regulations. Safe isolation is critical. If you are unsure about testing for dead circuits or IP ratings, it is safer to call a qualified electrician.
How high should I mount my floodlight?
For most semi-detached homes in Leeds, between 2.2m and 2.5m is the sweet spot. Too low and it's easy to tamper with; too high and the motion sensor limits range (and makes it a nightmare to clean or adjust).
What does 'Class II' or 'No Earth Required' mean?
It means the product has double insulation layers to prevent the casing from becoming live if a fault occurs. While the light itself might not need an earth connection, the cable supplying it should still have an earth wire for the circuit's protection device (RCD/RCBO) to operate correctly.
Are LED floodlights genuinely better than Halogen?
Absolutely. An old 500W halogen costs a fortune to run. A 50W LED gives similar light for 10% of the energy cost. Plus, LEDs don't get anywhere near as hot, reducing fire risk near timber fascias.
Do you install these lights at OR Electrics?
Yes, we supply and fit a wide range of security lighting. We can also inspect your existing wiring to ensure it's safe to handle outdoor loads.
