If there is one thing that causes nuisance tripping more than anything else, it is a poorly installed junction box. Whether it's moisture getting into a garden light or a loose connection under a floorboard, the junction box is the weak point in any circuit.

In Leeds, we deal with a lot of damp basements and stone-walled cellars where standard fittings just rot away. I often see homeowners wrapping wires in tape or using indoor boxes outside, which is a disaster waiting to happen. The safety of your home relies on these connections being secure and enclosed correctly.

In this review, I've selected three junction boxes suitable for different scenarios: a reliable budget option for dry areas, a heavy-duty waterproof box for gardens, and a clever inline connector for repairing damaged cables.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "IP Ratings (IP44 vs IP68)"

The Theory

"Many boxes claim to be 'waterproof' or 'weatherproof' on the packaging."

The Reality

IP44 prevents splashes but will fail in heavy UK rain. For anything outside in the garden that isn't under a porch, you need IP66 or IP68. Do not risk lower ratings for buried or exposed cables.

The Spec: "Maintenance Free"

The Theory

"Once the lid is screwed down, you never need to look at it again."

The Reality

Screw terminals can loosen over time due to thermal cycling (wires heating up and cooling down). For a truly maintenance-free joint under a floor, we use spring-lever connectors (like Wagos) inside a specific maintenance-free box.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

ABB IP44 Junction Box • Waterproof Electric Cable Connector Unit

Budget Pick
ABB IP44 Junction Box • Waterproof Electric Cable Connector Unit

ABB

ABB is a giant in the electrical world, and this simple box shows why. It's a no-nonsense, thermoplastic enclosure perfect for garages, lofts, or utility rooms where you need protection from dust and occasional splashes but not full submersion.

Price£2.75 (at the time of writing)
IP RatingIP44 (Splash proof)
MaterialSelf-extinguishing Thermoplastic
Dimensions80 x 80 x 40mm
The Good
  • Extremely affordable for a branded product
  • Self-extinguishing material enhances fire safety
  • Spacious enough for standard lighting connections
The Bad
  • IP44 is not suitable for direct exposure to heavy rain
  • Basic glands included are functional but basic

Installer Tip:

Whilst this box is rated IP44, I always recommend mounting it with the cable entries at the bottom if possible. This creates a natural 'drip loop' so condensation or minor leaks run away from the connections rather than into them.

HIMOMO IP68 Waterproof Junction Box, 3-Way Outdoor Junction Box (4pcs)

Quality Option
HIMOMO IP68 Waterproof Junction Box, 3-Way Outdoor Junction Box (4pcs)

HIMOMO

If you are running power to a shed or garden lights in Leeds, this is the grade of kit you need. The IP68 rating means it can handle being submerged, which is essential given how waterlogged our gardens get in winter. The pack of four offers excellent value for a larger project.

Price£19.99 (at the time of writing)
IP RatingIP68 (Submersible)
Cable Range3mm to 12mm
MaterialABS & Copper
The Good
  • IP68 rating is essential for robust outdoor wiring
  • Versatile sealing rings accommodate various cable sizes (3-12mm)
  • UV resistant material prevents brittleness in the sun
The Bad
  • Larger form factor might be hard to hide in small spaces
  • Requires careful tightening to ensure the seal bites correctly

Installer Tip:

When using the compression glands, ensure the rubber seal sits on the smooth outer sheath of the cable, not on the inner coloured wires. If you clamp onto the inner wires, water will track down the inside of the cable and trip your RCD.

Elezenioc IP68 Waterproof Junction Box, 2-Way Outdoor Cable Connectors

Problem-solving Option
Elezenioc IP68 Waterproof Junction Box, 2-Way Outdoor Cable Connectors

Elezenioc

This is a 'get out of jail' card for electricians. If you've accidentally cut through a cable with a spade, or need to extend a line without installing a bulky square box, this inline connector is perfect. It's streamlined, waterproof, and handles up to 41A, making it incredibly robust.

Price£6.99 (at the time of writing)
Configuration2-Way (Inline)
Current Rating41A (High Capacity)
Cable Capacity5-15mm diameter
The Good
  • Slim profile makes it easy to bury or hide
  • High current rating (41A) suitable for main power feeds
  • Simple installation for extending short cables
The Bad
  • Can be fiddly to wire if the cables are very short or stiff
  • Only 2-way, so strictly for joining/extending, not branching

Installer Tip:

If you are burying this underground, I recommend filling the box with a gel compound or resin pack before sealing it. Even with IP68, underground joints are susceptible to freezing and ground movement. A little extra protection ensures you won't have to dig it up in five years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hide a junction box under floorboards?
You can, but it must be 'Maintenance Free' (marked with 'MF'). Standard screw-terminal junction boxes must remain accessible for inspection. If you bury a screw-terminal box under a floor and the connection loosens, you have a hidden fire hazard that you can't access to fix.
What is the difference between IP44 and IP68?
IP44 resists water splashes from any direction but cannot withstand jets of water or submersion. It's fine for a garage. IP68 is dust-tight and can be submerged in water (usually up to 1.5m for 30 mins, check manufacturer specs). In Leeds, where rain is guaranteed, always choose IP66 or higher for outdoor garden work.
Why does my outdoor power keep tripping the RCD?
This is commonly caused by moisture entering a junction box or light fitting. Even a tiny amount of damp bridging the Live and Earth will trip a modern RCD. Check your junction boxes for condensation or cracked seals. If you're unsure, we can perform an insulation resistance test to locate the fault.
Do I need an electrician to fit a junction box?
For minor repairs like replacing an existing damaged box, you might be able to do it yourself if you are competent. However, if you are extending circuits, adding new outdoor power, or burying cables, this falls under Part P regulations and should be done or certified by a qualified electrician to ensure safety and insurance compliance.
