Running an extension lead through the kitchen window isn't just a tripping hazard; it's a massive safety risk, especially given the wet weather we see up here in the UK. Whether you need power for a lawnmower, a jet washer, or just some nice patio lighting, a proper outdoor socket is essential.

As an electrician in Leeds, I often get called out to fix outdoor sockets that have filled with water because they were just standard plastic boxes slapped on a wall without proper sealing. Water and electricity are a nasty mix, and if you don't get the IP rating and installation right, you'll be dealing with constant RCD tripping—or worse.

In this review, I'll walk you through three solid options for external power: a budget-friendly double socket, a robust lockable option ideal for security, and a single-gang unit for tight spaces. I'll also explain what to look out for to ensure your installation complies with regulations.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "IP66 Rating"

The Theory

"Protected against powerful water jets and dust ingress."

The Reality

This rating only applies when the lid is CLIPPED SHUT. If you have a plug inserted that prevents the lid from closing fully, or if you use a transformer plug (which is bulky), the socket is NOT waterproof. Use standard moulded plugs only.

The Spec: "DIY Installation"

The Theory

"Easy to install with just a drill and screwdriver."

The Reality

Part P of the Building Regulations places strict rules on outdoor electrical work. It must be RCD protected. If you tap into a ring main incorrectly, you could overload the circuit or leave the socket without earth protection. Ideally, get a pro to test it.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

GREENSAPPIRE Outdoor Waterproof Socket IP66 – 13A Double Switched Plug Socket with Cover

Budget Pick
GREENSAPPIRE Outdoor Waterproof Socket IP66 – 13A Double Switched Plug Socket with Cover

GREENSAPPIRE

This is a straightforward, no-nonsense double socket that does exactly what it says on the tin. It's perfect for homeowners who need a cost-effective way to plug in the mower or strimmer without breaking the bank.

Price£7.99 (at time of writing)
BrandGREENSAPPIRE
MaterialPolycarbonate (Shock-proof)
Config2 Gang (Double Socket)
The Good
  • Exceptional value for a double socket
  • Clear terminals make termination relatively easy
  • Polycarbonate build resists standard knocks
The Bad
  • Plastic latches can feel a bit stiff initially
  • Space for wiring behind the faceplate is tight if using thick armoured cable

Installer Tip:

When installing this, make sure you drill the small drainage hole at the bottom of the backbox (usually marked). If condensation builds up inside—which happens a lot in our damp Yorkshire climate—that little hole lets the water escape rather than corroding the terminals.

Outdoor Socket Waterproof IP66 Outside Double Plug Socket Weatherproof Wall Electrical Outlet 13Amp

Quality Pick
Outdoor Socket Waterproof IP66 Outside Double Plug Socket Weatherproof Wall Electrical Outlet 13Amp

Darbony

For landlords or those with accessible front gardens, this Darbony unit is a solid choice. The build quality feels more robust, and the lockable cover is a brilliant feature to stop opportunists using your electricity.

Price£13.98 (at time of writing)
BrandDarbony
FeatureLockable Cover
MaterialHigh-density UV-stabilised PC
The Good
  • Lockable cover prevents power theft (great for HMOs)
  • UV-stabilised housing stops the plastic going brittle in the sun
  • Dual silicone gaskets provide a superior seal
The Bad
  • Slightly bulkier than standard units due to locking mechanism
  • Padlock not always included (check specific listing)

Installer Tip:

Use compression glands for your cable entry rather than just poking the cable through the rubber grommet. It ensures a properly watertight seal that won't degrade over time. If you're running SWA (Steel Wire Armoured) cable, you'll need a separate adaptable box nearby as this unit won't easily terminate SWA directly inside.

Mega Socket

Sometimes you don't have the wall space for a double unit, or you want a dedicated socket for a pond pump or water feature. This single socket is compact, robust, and seals tightly on all four sides.

Price£12.99 (at time of writing)
BrandMega Socket
Config1 Gang (Single Socket)
RatingIP66
The Good
  • Compact footprint fits on narrow brick pillars
  • High impact UV stable housing
  • Blanking caps included for unused cable entries
The Bad
  • Only one outlet (obviously)
  • Slightly pricier than some doubles due to niche form factor

Installer Tip:

This unit is excellent for tough brick walls like we see in older Leeds terraces. Because it's smaller, it's easier to mount securely on uneven brickwork. Just ensure you seal the fixing screw holes with the provided caps, otherwise water will track right down the screw threads into the housing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an outdoor socket need its own circuit?
Not necessarily, but it must be RCD protected. Often, we can spur off an existing ring main (like the kitchen), provided the unexpected load won't trip your circuit constantly. For high-load items like hot tubs or large heaters, a dedicated circuit back to the consumer unit is definitely required.
Why does my outdoor socket keep tripping the electrics?
If it's tripping the RCD (the switch that protects against shocks), moisture has likely got inside. This could be a cracked seal, a loose gland, or just condensation. Switch the power off at the mains, open it up (if safe), and check for dampness. Bugs and slugs also love crawling in there and causing havoc!
Can I use steel wire armoured (SWA) cable directly into these sockets?
Generally, no. These plastic enclosures are a bit tight for terminating stiff SWA cable directly. The proper way is to terminate the SWA into a 'wiska box' or waterproof junction box nearby, and then run a short flexible cable (HO7RN-F) into the socket itself. It's much neater and maintains the waterproof integrity.
Are these sockets safe to jet wash?
IP66 means they are protected against 'powerful water jets', but I wouldn't recommend blasting them directly with a pressure washer at close range. The rating assumes the lid is fully closed and latched. If you blast the hinge or seal at high pressure, water can force its way in.
I'm a landlord in Leeds; do I need an EICR for outdoor sockets?
Absolutely. If you rent out a property, the Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) must cover all fixed wiring, including outdoor sockets. Given the damp conditions outdoors, these are common failure points. We check the seals, earth continuity, and RCD trip times to ensure your tenants are safe.
