One of the biggest issues my customers face after buying an electric vehicle is figuring out where to put the charger and the cable. If you don't have a garage wall right next to your charging port, or if you're worried about trailing cables becoming a trip hazard, you need a proper mounting solution.

In Leeds, where we have a mix of stone-fronted terraces and suburban driveways, there isn't a 'one size fits all' approach. A simple wall bracket works for some, whilst others need a dedicated pedestal post firmly bolted into concrete.

In this review, I'm looking at three options available right now: a budget cable management solution, a high-quality wall-mounted charger that avoids earth rod headaches, and a sturdy pedestal stand for those who need to charge away from the house walls.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "Weatherproof / Outdoor Use"

The Theory

"Products claim to be weatherproof and rust-resistant indefinitely."

The Reality

In my experience, even 'rust-resistant' steel needs maintenance. Regular checks on seals and moving parts are essential, especially with our wet Northern winters. Water ingress is the number one killer of outdoor electrics.

The Spec: "Easy Installation"

The Theory

"Marketing materials suggest you can just screw these stands into the ground in minutes."

The Reality

A pedestal stand is a heavy bit of kit. It requires a solid, level concrete base to be safe. You cannot simply screw these into paving slabs or tarmac; they will wobble and eventually pull loose. Proper groundworks are key.

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

VORSPRUNG® Type 2 EV Charger Holder - Universal Wall Bracket

Budget Pick
VORSPRUNG® Type 2 EV Charger Holder - Universal Wall Bracket

Vorsprung

This isn't a standalone post, but it's the most essential accessory for keeping your existing setup safe. At under £10, this simple angled holder keeps the Type 2 plug out of puddles and protects the pins from corrosion.

Price£7.95 (at the time of writing)
MaterialIndustrial Strength ABS
CompatibilityUniversal Type 2
InstallationWall mount (Screws included)
The Good
  • Extremely affordable protection for expensive cables
  • Angled design helps shed water away from the pins
  • Reduces trip hazards by keeping the cable looped correctly
The Bad
  • Plastic construction isn't as robust as metal alternatives
  • Included wall plugs are basic; I recommend upgrading them for stone walls

Installer Tip:

When mounting this to Leeds brick or stone, don't use the standard red plugs provided if your mortar is crumbly. Use a proper 7mm brown plug or a resin fixing to ensure it doesn't pull off the wall when you tug the cable.

evec VEC01 | EV Charger | 7.4kW | Untethered Wall Mount

Quality Pick
evec VEC01 | EV Charger | 7.4kW | Untethered Wall Mount

evec

Whilst technically the charger itself rather than just a stand, the evec VEC01 is a fantastic wall-mounted unit. It includes built-in PEN protection, which is massive for safety—it means we don't have to install a messy earth rod in your garden.

Price£314.99 (at the time of writing)
PowerAdjustable up to 7.4kW
SafetyBuilt-in PEN Protection
ConnectivitySmart App & OCPP 1.6J
The Good
  • Built-in PEN protection saves installation time and mess (no earth rod needed)
  • Adjustable power output keeps it compatible with various home fuses
  • Smart app allows charging during cheap tariff hours
The Bad
  • Requires professional installation to sign off (not a DIY plug-in)
  • Untethered means you must supply your own cable (though this looks neater)

Installer Tip:

This unit is 'untethered', meaning there is no permanently attached cable. This is great for keeping the front of your house tidy. Combined with the Vorsprung holder above, you have a very neat system.

Ufixed Home EV Charger Pedestal 7kW Type 2 Post

Problem-Solving Pick
Ufixed Home EV Charger Pedestal 7kW Type 2 Post

Ufixed

If you don't have a suitable wall near your parking spot, this Ufixed pedestal is the solution. It solves the problem of dragging cables across a garden path. It's compatible with most major brands like Tesla, Ohme, and Masterplug.

Price£109.99 (at the time of writing)
Height/WeightHeavy-duty 11kg steel
MaterialPowder-coated corrosion-resistant steel
CompatibilityTesla, Ohme, Evec, Masterplug
The Good
  • Allows installation away from the main building
  • Heavy 11kg weight provides good stability
  • Pre-drilled for major charger brands (saves drilling steel on site)
The Bad
  • Absolute requirement for a concrete pad installation
  • Cabling to the post requires armoured cable (SWA) buried correctly

Installer Tip:

Do not skimp on the base. I always cast a small concrete pad for these pedestals. Using Shield Anchor bolts into concrete ensures that if someone accidentally nudges it with a car bumper, it won't immediately topple over.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a stand or can I just mount the charger on the wall?
If you park directly next to your house, mounting on the wall is cheaper and easier. However, if you have to trail the cable across a pathway to reach the car, a stand (pedestal) installed right next to the parking spot is safer and removes the trip hazard.
Does the Ufixed pedestal come with the charger?
No, the pedestal is just the metal post. You still need to buy the charger unit (like the evec VEC01 reviewed here). The stand provides the mounting surface for the charger.
What is PEN protection and why does the evec charger mention it?
In the UK, strict regulations apply to outdoor charging to prevent electric shocks if the street supply develops a fault. Older chargers required an earth rod (a metal spike driven into the ground). Units with 'PEN protection' monitor the supply and cut power if a fault is detected, meaning no earth spike is needed. It's safer and neater.
Can I install an EV charger stand myself?
You can physically bolt the stand down yourself, but the electrical connection MUST be done by a qualified electrician. It involves running high-current armoured cable underground, which requires specific glands, RCD protection, and certification under Part P of the Building Regulations.
How much does professional installation cost in Leeds?
Costs vary depending on the distance from your fuse board to the charger location. A standard wall-mount is cheaper than running a trench to a pedestal stand. At OR Electrics, we provide bespoke quotes after assessing your property's specific earth bonding and supply capacity.
