It might seem like a small item, but electrical insulation tape is a staple in any trade professional's toolbox. However, not all tapes are created equal. I've been to plenty of jobs across Leeds where cheap tape has dried out, unravelled, or turned into a gummy mess, leaving live conductors exposed.

Whether we are undertaking a full house rewire or just marking cables for identification (phasing), the quality of the tape matters. In the damp cellars characteristic of Yorkshire's back-to-back houses, a tape that can withstand moisture and temperature changes is essential.

In this review, I'm cutting through the marketing to look at three solid options: a budget tape for general marking, a professional-grade option from a top manufacturer, and a heavy-duty solution for harsher environments. Let's find the right roll for your kit.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "Electrical Repair Capabilities"

The Theory

"Many people think wrapping tape around two twisted wires constitutes a permanent repair."

The Reality

This is dangerous and against regulations. Tape is for insulation reinforcement, bundling, or identification. It never replaces a proper mechanical connection like a Wago or connector block.

The Spec: "'Weatherproof' Claims"

The Theory

"Standard PVC tape is often marketed as waterproof enough for garden repairs."

The Reality

Standard PVC tape will fail outdoors due to UV exposure and frost. For genuine outdoor waterproofing, you need self-amalgamating tape or resin joints, not just standard insulation tape.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

Faithfull FAITAPEPVCBK Black PVC Electrical Tape 19 mm x 20 m

Budget Pick
Faithfull FAITAPEPVCBK Black PVC Electrical Tape 19 mm x 20 m

Faithfull

This is your standard bread-and-butter tape. At this price point, it's perfect for tasks where you're using a lot of material, such as bundling cables together during a first fix or acting as a temporary marker. It does the job without breaking the bank.

Price£1.49 (at time of writing)
BrandFaithfull
Length20m
MaterialPVC with adhesive backing
The Good
  • Extremely affordable at just £1.49
  • Decent tear resistance for general use
  • Good adhesive for basic bundling tasks
The Bad
  • Can become brittle in very cold conditions (like unheated Leeds lofts)
  • Adhesive may leave residue if left for long periods

Installer Tip:

When using budget tape, avoid overstretching it. Cheaper PVC has a 'memory'—if you stretch it too tight, it will try to return to its original length, causing the end to flag (lift up) after a few days.

Schneider Electric Premium PVC Electrical Tape Black 19mm x 20m

Quality Pick
Schneider Electric Premium PVC Electrical Tape Black 19mm x 20m

Schneider Electric

As an electrician, I see the Schneider name on consumer units and breakers daily—they know electrical safety. This tape feels completely different to the budget stuff; it's pliable, complies with fire safety standards, and doesn't turn into a sticky mess in your pocket.

Price£3.99 (at time of writing)
BrandSchneider Electric
SafetyFire Retardant PVC
Use CaseProfessional electrical maintenance
The Good
  • Fire retardant properties for safer installations
  • Excellent elasticity—moulds around uneven joints well
  • Professional-grade adhesive that holds without peeling
The Bad
  • More expensive than generic options
  • Might be overkill for simple non-electrical tying jobs

Installer Tip:

This tape is excellent for 'phasing'—marking wires in a 3-phase system or identifying switch lines in domestic lighting. It cuts cleanly and stays put, which keeps your consumer unit looking tidy and professional.

Black Electrical Tape Waterproof Heat Resistant Tape 20m x 19mm

Problem-Solving Pick
Black Electrical Tape Waterproof Heat Resistant Tape 20m x 19mm

WINSOME

If you are dealing with wiring in a garage, shed, or external environment, standard tape often fails due to moisture and UV rays. This option focusses on environmental resistance, making it a better problem-solver for harsh conditions where heat or damp might be an issue.

Price£3.98 (at time of writing)
BrandWINSOME
FeaturesWaterproof, UV Resistant, Heat Resistant
MaterialHigh-quality PVC
The Good
  • UV resistant properties prevent cracking in sunlight
  • Better moisture resistance than standard budget tape
  • Heat resistant—ideal for warmer running cables
The Bad
  • Slightly thicker, so less ideal for very tight spaces
  • Costlier per metre compared to bulk budget rolls

Installer Tip:

If you are using this for moisture protection, always wrap 'shingle fashion'—start low and wrap upwards. This ensures layers overlap in a way that allows water to run off the tape rather than seeping into the seams.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use electrical tape to repair a cut wire?
No, absolutely not. Insulation tape is for insulation, not mechanical connection. If the copper conductor is damaged, the cable needs to be replaced or joined properly with a maintenance-free connector (like a Wago) inside a suitable enclosure. Wrapping a twisted wire in tape is a fire hazard and illegal under BS 7671.
What does the colour of the tape mean?
In the UK, we use specific colours for identification (sleeving). Brown indicates Live (Line), Blue is Neutral, and Green/Yellow is Earth. We often use brown sleeving or tape on the 'switched live' wire in light switches to warn the next person that the blue wire is actually live when the switch is on.
Is electrical tape waterproof?
Most electrical tape is water-resistant, but not waterproof. It will shed rain, but if submerged, water will eventually creep under the adhesive. For underground or submerged joints, we use resin-filled joints or gels, not just tape.
Why does my electrical tape unwrap itself?
This usually happens because the tape was stretched too tightly during application. PVC has a 'memory' and tries to shrink back. It can also happen if you touch the adhesive too much with greasy fingers before sticking it down. Use good quality tape like the Schneider roll and don't stretch the final inch.
Do I need a rewire if my existing cables are wrapped in old fabric tape?
If you see black fabric tape or rubber-sheathed cables, your wiring is likely from the 1960s or earlier. This insulation degrades and becomes brittle, posing a fire risk. In Leeds' older housing stock, this is common. You should get an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) immediately to assess if a rewire is needed.
Is insulation tape fireproof?
Quality tape (like the Schneider option above) is 'fire retardant' or 'self-extinguishing', meaning it won't carry a flame if the source is removed. However, it is not 'fireproof'—it will burn if exposed to a continuous fire source. It prevents small sparks from becoming big fires, but it won't survive an inferno.
