Best Clamp Meters for Home Diagnostics: 2025 Expert Review
Oli at OR Electrics

Electrical faults can be a nightmare to pin down. One minute everything is fine, the next your RCD trips every time you put the kettle on. Whilst I always recommend calling a professional for serious electrical work, having a decent clamp meter can help a competent DIYer or landlord understand if a circuit is simply overloaded.
In Leeds, particularly with the old wiring we see in back-to-back terraces and the high load demands of student HMOs, identifying 'nuisance tripping' is a daily task. A multimeter is great, but a clamp meter is safer and easier for measuring current drawn by appliances without breaking the circuit.
I've compared three clamp meters available today: a budget-friendly option for simple checks, a high-spec unit for serious diagnostics, and a versatile 'problem solver' that handles tricky ghost voltages. Here is what I think.

Specs vs. The Real World
The Spec: "Clamp Function Usage"
"You can clamp the meter around a power cord to read the current."
This is the most common mistake. If you clamp around a whole cable (Live and Neutral together), the fields cancel out and you get zero reading. You must use a line splitter or clamp around a single conductor (Live only) inside a consumer unit or junction box.
The Spec: "NCV (Non-Contact Voltage)"
"Reliably detects if a wire is live without touching it."
NCV is a useful 'first check', but never trust your life to it. Ghost voltages or shielded cables can give false readings. Always prove dead with a proper two-pole tester before touching copper.

AstroAI Digital Clamp Meter Multimeter 2000 Counts

AstroAI
For under £17, this is a capable little unit for basic household AC checks. It's solid enough for a tool bag and features a clear backlit screen. However, be aware it only measures AC current, not DC, so it's strictly for mains electrics, not automotive work.
The Good
- Incredible value for money
- Compact size fits easily in tight boards
- Includes a flashlight which is handy in dark cupboards
The Bad
- Cannot measure DC electrical current (useless for car batteries/solar)
- 2000 counts resolution is basic compared to pro tools
Installer Tip:
This is great for landlords checking if a tenant is overloading a circuit. Clamp it quickly around the meter tail (the thick wire coming from the electricity meter) to see the total house load when they have all heaters on.

KAIWEETS
This is a serious piece of kit. It offers True RMS for accuracy and, crucially, supports Inrush Current measurement. This is vital for diagnosing why a breaker trips the moment a motor (like a saw or large pump) starts up. It also handles both AC and DC current.
The Good
- Measures Inrush current - essential for motor diagnostics
- Auto-mode saves time switching dial settings
- High accuracy with 6000 counts True RMS
The Bad
- More expensive than basic models
- Auto mode can sometimes be slower to settle than manual selection
Installer Tip:
Use the 'Inrush' function when diagnosing nuisance tripping on power tools or pumps. Standard meters are too slow to catch the millisecond spike that trips a Type B breaker; this meter will show you exactly how high the startup current goes.

Crenova
The Crenova shines in difficult diagnostic situations thanks to its LowZ mode (Low Impedance) which eliminates 'ghost voltages'—common in older Leeds properties with induced voltage in the cables. It also includes a temperature probe, making it a versatile problem solver.
The Good
- LowZ mode prevents false readings from ghost voltage
- Includes temperature probe for checking overheating terminals
- Impressive feature set (AC/DC Current) for the price
The Bad
- Build quality feels slightly less rugged than premium brands
- Probe leads are adequate but standard quality
Installer Tip:
I use the temperature probe on this unit to check busbars and connections inside consumer units. If a connection is loose, it generates heat before it sparks. This tool helps you spot a fire hazard before it becomes a disaster.
