One of the most common requests I get from homeowners in Leeds is to swap out tired, yellowing white plastic sockets for modern brushed steel. It is arguably the most cost-effective way to lift the look of a room without a full redecoration. However, metal accessories aren't just a cosmetic change; they introduce specific safety considerations.

Unlike plastic sockets, metal faceplates must be earthed. If you live in an older property—like the back-to-back terraces in Armley or Harehills—you might find your lighting circuits or older socket wiring lacks a CPC (Circuit Protective Conductor) or 'earth'. Fitting metal accessories in these situations is dangerous and against regulations.

In this review, I've selected three brushed steel options from British General (BG) that I frequently install. I'll explain which ones suit uneven Victorian walls, which are best for new builds, and what you need to know before you start unscrewing faceplates.

Specs vs. The Real World

The Spec: "Fingerprint Resistant"

The Theory

"Manufacturers claim a lacquer coating prevents unsightly fingerprints."

The Reality

whilst the lacquer helps, stainless steel always shows grease marks eventually. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive pads, as these strip the lacquer and lead to rusting.

The Spec: "Fits 25mm Back Box"

The Theory

"Most datasheets say these fit a standard 25mm mounting box."

The Reality

This is tight. If you have 2.5mm² ring main cables looped in (plus a spur), a 25mm box is a struggle. I always recommend 35mm boxes for metal flat plates to prevent crushing the cables.

My Top 3 Recommendations

Three options to cover different needs and budgets

BG Electrical Single Switched Power Plug Wall Socket, Raised and Slim Profile

Budget Pick
BG Electrical Single Switched Power Plug Wall Socket, Raised and Slim Profile

British General

This is my go-to recommendation for clients seeking a quick upgrade on a budget. The 'raised' profile is forgiving on uneven plaster, making it a safer bet for older properties than the flatter alternatives.

Price£5.40 (at time of writing)
BrandBritish General
ProfileRaised slim profile
The Good
  • Raised profile hides minor wall imperfections nicely
  • Colour-coded terminals make identifying connections easier
  • Integrated moisture gasket protects the metal from new plaster
The Bad
  • Not as sleek as the screwless flatplate options
  • Grey inserts might not match every decor style

Installer Tip:

In older Leeds terraces, walls are rarely perfectly flat. This raised profile socket has a bit of flex and depth, meaning it sits flush against the wall better than rigid flat-plate designs. It avoids that unsightly gap you often see with premium flat plates on bumpy plaster.

BG Electrical NBS Switch Socket Outlets - Brushed Steel (Pack of 5)

Quality Choice
BG Electrical NBS Switch Socket Outlets - Brushed Steel (Pack of 5)

British General

If you are upgrading a whole room, buying in bulk is the only sensible way to do it. This pack of five double sockets offers the same reliable BG Nexus quality—double pole switching and robust terminals—at a price point that makes sense for larger projects.

Price£33.89 (at time of writing)
Configurationpack of 5 x Twin 13A Sockets
SwitchingDouble Pole (Live and Neutral)
The Good
  • Double pole switching ensures safer isolation of appliances
  • Consistent brushed finish across all units
  • Cost-effective way to source sockets for a full room renovation
The Bad
  • Requires a decent depth back box (ideal 25mm-35mm) due to the mechanism size
  • Plastic inserts are grey, which some clients find industrial

Installer Tip:

These units have two earth terminals. If you are extending a ring final circuit or have high integrity earthing requirements, this is a brilliant feature. Always ensure you sleeve your earth wires with green and yellow sleeving—bare copper is not acceptable.

BG Electrical Screwless Flatplate Single Socket

Problem-solving
BG Electrical Screwless Flatplate Single Socket

British General

This 'screwless' design solves two problems: it looks ultra-modern with no visible fixing screws, and it makes decorating a breeze. You can unclip the front plate, paint the wall without needing masking tape, and clip it back on for a perfect finish.

Price£5.70 (at time of writing)
StyleScrewless Flatplate
Warranty25 Years Manufacturer's Warranty
The Good
  • Clip-on fascia allows for neat painting without masking tape
  • Ultra-slim profile looks incredibly high-end
  • No visible screws for a minimalist finish
The Bad
  • Requires a perfectly flat wall to look good
  • Deeper back box recommended (minimum 25mm, ideally 35mm)

Installer Tip:

I only recommend these for new builds or walls that have been freshly skimmed. If you try to fit these rigid flat plates onto a bumpy Victorian brick wall, they will bow, the clip-on front won't seat correctly, and you'll see gaps. If your walls are uneven, stick to the raised profile option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to earth brushed steel sockets?
Absolutely. This is non-negotiable. Metal accessories conduct electricity. If a live wire leads lose and touches the metal plate, proper earthing ensures the fuse or RCD trips immediately. Without an earth connection, the plate becomes live and could be fatal. If your wiring lacks an earth (common in pre-1960s lighting circuits), you cannot install these.
Can I replace white sockets with silver ones myself?
Under Part P of the Building Regulations, you are permitted to replace existing accessories/sockets in a non-special location (like a living room or bedroom) yourself, provided you are competent. However, you must ensure the connections are tight and the earthing is verified. If in doubt, hire a registered electrician.
What is the difference between single pole and double pole sockets?
A single pole switch breaks only the 'Live' connection. A double pole switch breaks both 'Live' and 'Neutral'. The BG sockets reviewed here are generally double pole. This is safer, as it completely isolates the appliance from the supply when switched off, which is preferable for safety and when diagnosing nuisance tripping.
How do I clean brushed steel sockets?
Never use wet cloths or sprays directly on the socket—water and electricity don't mix. Use a dry microfibre cloth to buff away fingerprints. If you must use a cleaner, spray a tiny amount onto the cloth (not the socket) and wipe gently. Avoid abrasive scourers as they will scratch the brushed finish.
Why won't my new flat plate socket fit flush to the wall?
This is a common issue in older Leeds properties. Flat plate sockets have zero tolerance for uneven plaster. Additionally, the mechanism on the back might be hitting the back of the mounting box if the box is too shallow (less than 25mm). You may need to deepen the wall box or switch to a 'raised profile' socket.
